snorkel?

Wondering if any of you 1st genners have a safari snorkel on your truck? Are they worth cutting up a fender for? Pros and cons? Worth the money? Ect.... I like the look of em( saw on on a cherroke the other day) but never on a t4r. Please post pics and your thought on the safari snorkel. Cheapest place to get them also if you know. I find em on ebay occassionaly, but not often.

I wasn't in deep water when I needed one. The intake in the '87 4runner is in the front half way up the rad, small bow wave in a puddle was all it took.

That's odd, the intake on my '86 is at the very top of the front grill, 'bout 3 feet off the ground or so.

Never. But you never know.

The biggest problem I see with snorkels is that once installed, you'll likely want to try it out.

My thought exactly. And did you properly protect the axle vents, transmission and transfer case vents, electrics, and the rest of the long list of stuff ruined by water that you never thought of before you tested the new snorkel?
Have to admit though, they do look cool in a "nothing stoppin' me" "camel trophy" sort of way.

How bout Electric fan with shut off switch? I would like to see a write up on the build even though I don't plan on getting in that much H2O. I would like to learn from a deep water warrior about what tends to get water damage and what the remedies are.

How is the air on top of your cab colder than the air in front of your grill?

And remember that you're talking about a longer intake tube, which is going to have a slight negative effect...

ARB states in their Safari Snorkel ad that it "...deliver a continuous and cooler supply of air for maximum engine performance...". I can only assume air picked up above the vehicle is cooler than air in the engine compartment. *shrug*

And remember that you're talking about a longer intake tube, which is going to have a slight negative effect...

I forget where but I also read that their snorkel delivers more air than a stock setup so not sure about that either.

Here's a review on the Safari Snorkel. I must admit I'm somewhat tempted. Probably should spend my money getting my truck running properly first though.

Will a snorkel make your truck into a magically powerful beast? No. Will a snorkel on its own transform your truck into a river fording monster? No.

But if you like it - and who wouldn't like that solid, go-anywhere look? - I say go for it! I plan to install a snorkel on my 2nd gen T4R for no reason other than I want one. I will route my axle vent lines up a little higher, but I don't intend to ford anything deeper than the bottom of my doors (water inside your interior sucks). Snorkels look cool, they can serve a purpose and are entirely the preference of the owner/driver. It sounds like you like them as well... go for it!

I suspect that's a generic statement on ARBs part, aimed at those vehicles with the intake behind the radiator. I've owned a couple rigs like that, and moving that intake certainly improves matters.

And I'm skeptical about the claim that they'll deliver more air volume, unless they're bypassing the AFM. It certainly isn't going to get any bigger, no matter how big the intake or cool the snorkel is.

Water crossings aside, the snorkel can draw in a bit cleaner air while traveling in a convoy in dusty conditions. I'm not saying a snorkel is a cure all for cleaner air, or that it will negate the need for an air filter, but if you are following someone on a dirt road in central California in July (as is the case for me a lot), the dust they unsettle is right at grille level. Again, it isn't reason enough to buy one, but if the OP likes them I don't see them being a bad thing. I agree with you however, that it isn't going to be a magical fix for anything. Toyota's engineers are pretty smart.

Just to verify that I'm thinking correctly doesn't the radiator get hot? Therefore heating up the air that the intake is bringing it to the truck? Weather it is infront or behind the intake..ans bringing the intake outside of the truck would be a means od direct cooler air?

If its hot out & the sun is beating down on the asphalt, dirt, sand, rock, whatever, the air close to the ground is usually a lot hotter than that above. Perhaps for that reason alone a snorkel might deliver cooler air.

If really cooling the intake air is your thing, they also offer an intercooler. Not sure if this can be made to work in conjunction with their snorkel though.

+1 i personally think the look great. If i ever got one it would be for looks not for river crossings thoug it does flood here from time to time....
