Snow Driving ?'s

Yeah, blizzaks will be bald after a single summer. I have the space for extra sets of wheels, and it's easy to just pop the car up on jack stands and swap the wheels twice a year.
 
I just got some Cooper ATw 265/75/16. Love them! I live in Rhode Island and we get our share of snow and rain. So far, they have been great except that one time I accelerated around a curve on a bridge.
The trick to driving in snow/ice is.....find an empty parking lot an go nuts. See what she does in every gear, speed an turn situation. if you start spinning, turn toward your ass and let off the gas. Snow rules!!

They are known overall the best all season tire. They do best in ice snow pack. Wet they could be a little better but do really well all around.
 
Side note: how many damn posts do I need before I can start a thread? I've got a couple other things i have questions about and can't find the current threads to help me.
 
If deciding to run snow chains or snow tracj etc. Would u typically use them on all 4 wheels or just 2 of the 4... Here in TN we see more ice storms with ice reaching about a inch thick on road ways anyone have any advice,

The rules are 15 posts then you can start a new thread. It's to keep people from jumping on and spamming the site. I believe there's a bit of a delay and it seemed like I went 16 before I could.

For the past 15 years I've run chains on just the fronts in 4WD. I tried them on my rear tires my first winter like the User Manual recommends but trust me they don't work back there. You need the front tires grabbing into the ice/snow going up or down hills. I run Les Schwab Quick fit Diamond chains. They cost under $100. They offer a beefier chain for an additional $100 but you don't need those.

Be sure to adjust them after about a half mile or else they'll start to slap the running boards and everything else. If they loosen up again, pull over and adjust them.

Advise for Ice - STAY HOME! Ice sucks., but if you don't have an option and you have to use chains, keep in mind they work like ice skates if you're not careful. They're horrible on thin ice especially when you hit dry patches of pavement. Like everyone before me here has said, it's an art and takes some practice.

I feel bad talking about something unrelated to the thread, but since you asked...

I picked up codes from my OBD2 reader: P0300,P0304,P0305,P0306. I know it's for cylinder misfire, but the question is: why those 3? I find it hard to believe that 3 spark plugs or 3 coils would have all failed, so my thought is possibly an O2 sensor. I did read that changing the fuel filter could possibly help, I'm going to do it anyway in the next couple of days.

Also, I went to get my emissions done today since I just bought the car, and the car is changing states. I had cleared the code so that emissions would pass, but I failed anyway because the catalyst, evaporative system, and oxygen sensors came up as "not ready". Any thoughts?

Update:

Picked up a set of Michelin Defender tires, just went out in a snow storm too and they did great.

After I got a diagnostic done at the dealer, it looks like the only engine problems are plugs and wires, but I was pleasantly (quite angry) surprised to find that the front brakes were seized, and end link on the sway bar was gone, and the A/C doesn't work. Neither does the rear windshield wiper. :ybrick:

They said it would be $2500 for them to repair, $1800 for the brakes alone. Meanwhile I just bought rotors, pads, and calipers for $250 so they can suck it.

You referring to Blizzaks?

Depends on size and model, but Blizzaks are often the worst-performing premium winter tire. Continental, Michelin and Nokian are almost always better.

The Norwegians are usually the first to test tires each season. This is the 2020 test, some tires tested are not available in USA.

Best all around tire

I imagine our conditions are similar. I live in Austin Tx. Pictured are my 2 4 Runners. Both run on Nitto tires. The Gen 3 runs on Nitto Trail Grapplers and the 2021 4 Runner runs on Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Both are excellent wearing tires.

On road or off road. Throttle to the floor and fronts wheels go side to side ( plus or minus lockers if you're feeling frisky) till you get where you're going...Then throw that bish in park
 
I think a lot depends on your particular winter road conditions. Many years back on this thread I talked about my love for the studded tires. Thats when I lived in the lower 48 and delt with black ice. Those same studded tires sucked up here where I am now. We dont see much black ice. That siad...in southern alaska they see lots of black ice...and people swear by studded tires..
currently....and for the last 3 winters I have been rolling on blizzaks and have not yet had to put on chains. My summer tires KO2's suck in ice ( I totaled a 4runner on black ice with KO2s, not in 4wd and driving a bit fast ) .Blizzaks are what is/was the gold standard for up here. up till 2 years ago there was only 1 nokian dealer and nobody sold the michelins...even costco sold the blizzaks. would I take the blizzaks into off road snow....no in that situation you need big lugs to bite into the snow.
now we have several nokian dealers...and costco now sells the michelins.

so what tire is best is really dependent on your area..or where you plan to dirve even in your area..as even within one state you can have a different conditions and needs.
be real easy on the brakes and keep your speed down and be really on the look out for the fools that have worn out all season tires. driving like its mid summer....those are the guys that will blindside you
