So I popped a hole in my muffler...

Not sure exactly when it happened, I assume it was doing some fast dirt trail riding through the corn fields last week. It dropped down to 0 a few days ago and I noticed a blast of exhaust shooting at me when I was brushing snow off. Sure enough there was a nice ding right in the muffler, looks like someone shot a hole in it (who knows maybe I pissed someone off :AK47: ) either way I can't roll the window down with out a nice reminder of my leak. Should I just chop it off after the cat? There's no emissions here in SD so that wouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't be able to replace it until this summer when I have extra money to spend and a shop to work in. Or is there any way to patch it up until then? Thanks for the help.

Emissions are irrelevant, all the muffler does is attenuate noise. That said, hacking it off will make the truck sound like ass and piss off everybody within earshot, which will be a lot more people than if you had a muffler.

Permatex makes a muffler repair putty, any auto parts place should have it. If it's too big to just stuck epoxy in, cut up a beer or soda can and glue it over the hole with the epoxy. That should get you by until you can afford a pretty new Flowmaster.

Front tires probably kicked up a rock and sent it through it. Does it look like something shot INTO it or OUT of it?

Those midgets... saw 3 of them running out the tailpipe just now. No whoever shot it definitely did it from the outside, looks like it skid into the side at an angle from the front tire. I like the beer can and puddy idea! Maybe I'll just armor the whole thing like that while I'm down there :rockon:

I got one of these Bosa Exhausts at RockAuto.com.
Less than $100 shipped, sounds way better than before. Bolts right up, no welding.

Under $100 shipped for a bolt on is nice! That's cheaper than what I paid in total, and I wouldn't have a tailpipe that's slowly rusting a bit.

My muffler started getting rust holes a while back, but it wasn't too loud and is after the cat, so just meant it was a little louder than normal. After a year or two I picked up a weld-on one, and a cheap HF welder. But then ended up paying a shop $60 or something to weld it on (so maybe $150 total), deciding this wouldn't be a good project to start my welding practice on.

But for the most part there isn't much problem running with a hole in the muffler for a bit aside from some more noise. It could mess with the back pressure a bit, but probably not enough to matter since many aftermarket mufflers are higher flow than stock.

I made a patch for a hole in my muffler with a bit of tin cut to size. I then used high temp rtv to glue it in place, rivets to hold it in place, and the rtv also helped seal the patch so exhaust didnt leak through the edges of the patch.
