So I ran over a rather large dog last night

Driving home last night going around 80mph I ran over a dog that probably weight 50-60lbs. I wasn't able to pull over safely for a couple miles but this is what I found. I know it's grease from the CV Axle. My question is do you think the impact could have cause the boot to open up and shoot grease all over? I was able to drive the rest of the way home without issue but I def want to check this out once I have more time.

Cv grease usually has a color to it. But if the boot isn’t ripped. Then I don’t see why you couldn’t pump grease back in. And put a hose clamp.

Do you find a rupture in the boot? Or your CV axle nut was loose and moved the axle inwards (towards the engine)?
Sorry for the dog, but we kill so many little bugs just by sucking into the radiator. Dog is a big life so we feel it.

Did it have a collar? and but it sounds like you couldn't check the body

power wash it first...it could be blood and guts...I hit a deer and the intenstines ripped open and I had crap down the side of my truck. Sliced it's throat because it was still doing the kicking chicken
the CV boot is like a stress ball, sure it could pump grease out between one of the bands and the axle after an impact. Pull a band, pump grease in it, put a new band on it and drive on

Could that be brake fluid? It looks more like an oil than grease.

Check your brake fluid reservoir level, and then carefully inspect your brake lines to make sure that they have not been compromised. Look on the bright side, it was a dog and not a person...for some reason we seem to have several fatalities in Houston every week that stem from someone crossing the freeway, typically under the cover of darkness in the early hours of the morning.

I'd imagine that you'll find a tear in the boot if you look closely.

Get some new OEM (to avoid short lifespan Chinese rubber) boots and have fun rebooting it. Probably a better bet than cheap off brand CV shafts from a parts store, being cheaper is a bonus.

Its definitely not oil, the reason I was thinking grease is because of how thick it was and the color. As for the dog I don't know why it was where it was. Here in West Texas there's a good distance between towns and I was probably about 8 miles from the closest town. I don't think the dog suffered. Dammit I felt bad though.

You sure it wasn't a coyote? They can get to a pretty good size.

As far as the grease goes, the band fittings that hold the boots on aren't made to hold pressure. So, if part of that coyote pressed in on that boot at 80MPH you'd see a spray pattern very close to what the photo's in the OP look like. There's a chance the boots not torn at all. If you tear a boot the grease goes up and down not out. At least that's what my experience with torn boots is. I watched all the seasons of Dexter so I'm pretty sure I got this one. lol

Positive it wasn't a coyote. I had seen a couple earlier in the night. This dog was black with a white stripe running down the center of his body. And the boot isn't torn. I was able to clean off all the grease today, and the boot is still intact. Thank you for all your help guys.

Maybe it’s just bodily fluid of the dog ? The cv has a distinct grease. Pretty obvious when a cv axle is leaking grease. “Grease”. Doesn’t really get tossed like that around the wheel. Looks exactly like a rear axle seal leak. OP, I’d just check the front diff fluid incase it something happens to the front diff oil seal. Just incase.
