A directly-injected 3.5l one, claimed to be "more powerful and efficient" than our current 4.0l. Any ideas on when it will make its way over to T4R and whether it's going to be decent?

Updated: Meh, it's just the current Camry, etc. engine (2GR-FE) with direct injection, seems like.

2016 Taco changes

Toyota debuted the 2016 Tacoma at the Detroit auto show. Some of the improvements include:

- new 4.0 direct/port injected V6. No word yet on power/economy specs.
- 6 speed transmissions
- Limited trim level that includes blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert.

Maybe some of these improvements will filter into the 2016 or 2017 4Runner.

Not exactly a camry motor with DI. This new motor also runs a Atkinson/Otto cycle similar to the new lexus 5.0L V8 (RC-F) and the 2.0L Turbo (NX200t).

It also gets a 6 speed auto as well. I don't know the hp and tq specs but I'd be surprised if the 4runner didn't get both. Would seem redundant to me to have two V6's in one company and an outdated 5 speed auto tranny.

I am thinking why the refreshed 4runner didn't get this new engine and trans...unless it just wasn't ready at the time.
 
its a 3.5L V6 with DI and running the Otto/Atkinson cycle.

You are right, it is 3.5L.

It is actually both port and direct injected. It uses port injection under some load conditions and direct injection under others.

They have been using 2 different 4L V6s since 2010. The 4L in the 2010+ 4Runner and FJC have a different head and dual VVTI, where the 2005-2015 Tacoma still have the old single VVTI 4L.

I guess I'm just a little surprised the Tacoma and 4runner aren't more in line with power trains. Based on your statement, the 4runner wouldn't get new power trains until a 6th gen...if there is one, correct? And that wouldn't bow until early 2016 as a 2017 model?

Correct. Also as [MENTION=78273]Jeremy556[/MENTION] just pointed out the FJC, 4Runner and Tacoma have not shared an engine for awhile. You have to remember that North America is just a piece of the Toyota sales. What might be logical for us Americans is not when speaking of global platforms. There are even minor differences of 4Runner options between us and Canada. You should be able to get a 6th Gen 4Runner in October of 2016 and it will probably have many of the features the new Tacoma has. Or not.
 
Back to the Ops comment - engine - 2GR-FE.

That engine is a transverse-mount - Camry/Avalon-Highlander-Sienna-Rav4.

As [MENTION=78273]Jeremy556[/MENTION] mentioned - single vvti and dual vvti. I suspect the 2016 Tacoma got the dual vvti.

Hard to imagine FWD in a Tacoma or a complete reengineering of the 2GR-FE to keep RWD.
 
It probably just shares the block. The new 3.5 has both direct and sequential? Fuel injection. Also runs the Atkinson cycle. My only thoughts with the smaller engine is lower end power for towing and serious wheeling.

The modified Atkinson cycle engines are known for weak torque, so that is also a concern of mine. Time will tell.

Nope, the 2GR-FE Engine is a FWD engine using Dual VVTi in the latest versions. You're correlation would be more accurate if you were talking about the Lexus derived 2GR-FSE that uses the D4S injection system for its RWD platforms. Keep in mind that displacement has little to do with engine families in this respect; the 4.0L V6 1GR-FE engine is in the same family as the 3.5L V6 2GR-FE engine but they share different design goals. Much in the way the 4.0L V8 1UZ-FE was derived from F1 racing engines to power the Lexus LS400/Toyota Celsior, while the 4.7L V8 2UZ-FE was designed completely differently for low-end torque desired in the Land Cruiser and later Tundra/Sequoia platforms. You'd think the 4.6L V8 1UR-FE was just an updated 2UZ-FE block; but in reality its actually a downsized 5.7L V8 3UR-FE engine (the UZ Family is Cast-Iron/Aluminum Head, the UR Family of V8's is All Aluminum.)

What they are talking about is the D4S Injection System that Toyota/Lexus has used for a while; its sort of a hybrid GDI system that utilizes a GDI injector bank and a secondary set of standard port injectors (my assumption is this is to overcome the GDI's inherent design flaw of severe carboning issues), though from what I have heard its more inline with being a standard port injection system with GDI added than a GDI system with a secondary set of injectors.

Chances are they will redesign the block and heads significantly from the 2GR-FSE (which, without an actual engine code to dissect I would assume is it's closest ancestor) to accommodate the Atkins Combustion Cycle; the most obvious drawback being that these engines will ingest oil on par with the Prius/Hybrid engines that use the same design (so a oil catch-can may not be a bad idea.)

It is not the 2GR-FE or the 2GR-FSE. It is an evolution of the 2GR. Weight reduction, smarter VVT, efficiency improvement in the mechanicals. I can't wait to drive a new Taco with it.

I am guessing you have some insider info but cannot share it at this time (for obvious reasons). However, any chance on giving us a heads up on when the specs might be revealed and whether or not a 6th gen 4runner is in the cards?
