Finally got around to taking the redo with manual settings tonight. Posting a .gif but the RAW and JPEG versions are linked to my Google album. 1/10s @ 200ISO. Both the meterings were set at center weighted. I played around with matrix and spot but I saw little to no difference. Spot should have been pretty dramatic at lowering the exposure of the building lights assuming it wanted to concentrate on the beam but it didn't. It's just a small hobby of mine so I don't know the full detail of it.

The wiring harness that runs to my passenger side carries the required voltage to the ballast and the ballast then fires the bulb on the passenger side.
It is PnP.
Last night was the first time I got to drive my 2015 4Runner in the dark. Normally I don't critique the headlights too much as I try to remain vigilant of my surroundings while driving at night. The low beams were ok and the highbeams were much better. Both were better than the headlights and hazy lenses on the 2000 Subaru I was driving before this. They are also better than the plethora of 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's cars I've driven in the past. My eyesight isn't as good as it was and I wouldn't mind brighter headlights, so I'll be upgrading at some point.

Agreed. The first night I drove in the rain I had to pull over to make sure I actually turned the headlights on because I couldn't see the lines on the road.

provides more information about their headlight ratings. So it's interesting to look at the data behind the ratings. Here is a comparison of the 4Runner data with the RAV4 ratings. (On the 4-point Good, Acceptable, Marginal, and Poor scale, RAV4 received an Acceptable, and the 4Runner a Poor.) Here's the catch in their ratings: having headlights that automatically switch between low and high beams (high-beam assist) will result in higher ratings.
My conclusion: the Insurance Institute really wants to force automakers to make high-beam assist standard on all vehicles.

That's a fair conclusion and I believe it to be valid as well.
Any idea how they determine the "optimal" high and low beam distances?

You cant really say that. Not all LEDs provide the same output, nor do HID. Some are better than others, or worse than others. Measurement of lumens can also be abit of bs depending on how it was done.

i've always thought that despite the poor low beam performance the high beams were pretty good so it's interesting to see the results mirror that

I'm not doubting that. I'm basing it off of the LED's I've come across compared to the HID kits I have used.

To OP: Ive done a studid amount of headlight research. Get the Morimoto kit and the XB fogs. Diode dynamics is also developing a fog light, you could wait for those (few months).

Heres a pic of my full on retrofit as others have done, fogs are not on. If I had budget contraints I would have went with the morimoto HID kit.

Seriously people, just do this H9 swap. Its cheap as hell and has awesome results. I have been running it for a long time and it's by far the best cheap mod you can do.

Well I got so excited i ordered the XD Xtreme kit before these were posted.
Doesn't sound like a bad way to go tho.

You'll be fine. A lot of good reviews on the XD kits. Just make sure to take your time to adjust/aim them. It's easy. Use a #3 or 4 phillips head.
