so whats the deel with royal purple fluids

Just bought a 99 sport... my second 3rd gen. Its got a 100k on it, and I'd like to do a fluid change.. People seem to talk alot about royal purple... is it really that good??

It has a cult following just like Amzoil. It's expensive and probably very good quality...though I have never used it.

yes royal purple is good...but is it better than any other top brand synthetic oils? that is the million dollar question. I have used it and could not tell any difference in vehicles. HOWEVER..When i worked as electrical Eng. for the oil field in our area we had a Gas booster plant that kept wearing out bearings in the compressor motors about every 6-7 months. these motors are as big as a house so tear down time was weeks and the loss of production was even more costly.

in 2007 we called R.P. and they came out looked at our motor and gave us a sample to use. well as of the time that i had left in 2009 the motor had not been down for repairs. That company has sinced switched all their motors over to R.P.

Ive seen more bad then good when it comes to rp. A friend of mine went through 3 motors in his wifes 6.0 suburban using rp and on the third one he finally got wise and sold it before it locked up again. Granted, those 6.0's seem to have some oiling problems and develop lots of valvetrain noise when the miles get higher but ever since this ive never used it, well i never used it before then. Imo, mobil 1 is a far superior product and alot of times is much cheaper. Rp is expensive and your paying more for the name then the actual oil.

I'm at 260,500 miles now. I just went to synth in the last oil change at 255,000 miles in order to extend my oil change intervals from 3300 (with dino) miles to 6000 (now with synth).:bluejump:

thanks for the info. Ive been talking to mechanics, and I seem to get mixed reviews. I haven't herad anything negative about mobil 1, so that what I went with. My next questio, is should I go with a synth in my transmission?

RP is overpriced, Mobil 1 for everything is a safe bet.

I run RP in my '99. I use the 40 weight since I'm at 150,000 miles. I also use a K&N oil filter. It's a $80 do it yourself oil change, but can you put a price on peace of mind? I usually do a change every 6,000 miles even though they say you can stretch it to 10,000 if you change the filter.

I'm not going to argue that Mobil 1 is better or worse. I've read a lot of data and have come to the conclusion that they are comparable products. The reason why I chose RP is because a few race teams (that aren't compensated by RP) run their products by choice.

205,XXX on mine and 246,XXX on my dad. I Decided to try it instead of mobil 1 full synthetic this time around. Running the bigger Ford Tarus filter also so I'll probably wont change them until around 6,500 miles.

I might run RP is a purpose built vehicle that will be exposed to harsh driving but on a stock vehicle IMO it's overkill and those race teams that run it probably change their oil after every race and can't really compare to a street driven vehicle.

I've been using M1 for over 15 years in mutliple cars including my very raced turbo Eclipse and never had an issue. With my 4Runner I change it every 8-9k miles or every 10 months whatever comes first. I spend about $40ish on my changes once a year.
