no concerns about the front lower edge of that bumper closest to the tire? I would undercut it to follow the wheel well

I'm going to use the OEM rear Trail Edition bumper cover to clean up the sides and void under the tail lights. I thought about plating the sides but decided against it for a couple reasons. First off, it would be a ton of work to match the compound contours of the rear quarter panels, and second, there really isnt any where to reinforce the sheet metal too, it would just be some contoured sheet metal panels hanging there. Also, I saw no way to keep sheet metal sides in as close to the body as the OEM covering. Gotta remember, the bumper is directly attached to the frame which moves independently from thy body and you need some clearance between the two.

Function over form. This bumper is built with function in mind first. The trim comes last. Plating up the sides will give me all the protection that I will EVER need and then some.

Keen eye :naughty: There is excess material there so it can be trimmed correctly once the rear bumper cover is integrated in to the new steel bumper. It will match the lines of the original fender well. That will be one of the last things to be trimmed. Even at full compression there is no contact of the tire on the bumper now, the trimming will be purely for aesthetics.

Since this is my build thread and I haven't had time to work on my build for the last week, I figured I may as well hi-jack my own thread and share some pics from my recent Mt. Whitney summit trip last week. We completed a difficult 5 day trip last night at around 5pm, 44.4 miles (almost half of which were cross country / off trail) 10,494 feet total elevation gain, and 11,634 feet of total decent.

A couple pics.

PS - This is actually 5th gen related.... We drove my buddies new Salsa Red Trail Edition up there!!!!

I keep going to the first page to look at that sexy front end! I am just in awe of the TC Upper & Lowers AND the Omegas! More pictures please!

amazing work, how do you plan to defeat gravity with the aux tank filler lower than the top of the aux tank though?

Thanks for the compliment! The filler neck will be on top of the bumper (I'm putting it about 10" to the left of where the latch sits) and the aux. fuel tank will be sitting between the rear frame rails. There is about a 2"-3" drop from where the filler neck will sit and the top of the tank.

Thanks brother! It is truly an animal of a different sort. I'm spending the next two weeks getting the bumper done and the truck all prepped for a big 4 day off road trip through Death Valley. So stoked that it is finally cooling off. 4x4 Season is here for So Cal!!!!

In response to a couple PM's and such, I just thought I would answer a couple things. First off, yessiree... 100% of the work done to my truck was done by my two hands. No one else has touched my truck (except Toyota for the free maintenance stuff ). I have literally hundreds and hundreds of hours of work involved in the build, many of my parts are my own unique design, many are the result of my combining the things I like from the contributors on this forum and tweaking the design to my own, and some are straight up plagiarized (Thanks Antman, MeBe4Running, Ducmonsta, and others!!). I am a machinist, among other things. I have never had formal, paid education in the industry within which I work, all of my knowledge and fabrication skills are a result of trial and error, 1,000's of sweat hours during work, after work, and on the weekends, and friendly instruction from those who know more than I. I greatly appreciate those who see the hard work invested in my truck as I see in the other vehicles (all gen. T4R's!) on this forum and as such, I have a greater appreciation for those who constantly find the time to contribute positive knowledge to the forum in the form of detailed write-ups, unique and thrifty mods, and outright insane ideas :naughty:. My truck is merely a fun little side project... I just straight up enjoy buildin cool $hit!!!! I am glad to help anyone out that I can with the specs from my mods, pics, or anything else within reason that will help out with someone else's build.

Aside from that, I'm hoping this week I can spend some of my lunch break and time after work to finish the bumper and get it sent off to one of our forum members for a nice powder coat!

Cheers!

Those with the Gobi Ladder, here is what you want:

Lift Supports

When you order, you must put in the comments section the following: "Convert to 10mm straight ends"

Part#49124 244LB Force 22.7" Extended 15.45" Collapsed

Do we know the part # for those WITHOUT the ladder?

I never looked into an exact OEM replacement, but dollars to doughnuts I would betchya that the beefed up ones I found would work as a stock replacement just fine. The increased pressure isn't too great to where it would make is really hard to close the door.

I think it is the same part, but with an added benefit. Once the rear door is up, you can use it for chin ups! Be safe.

Nailed it!

are you referring to rod ends? it seems they have straight and 16 degrees angled.

Yup. The tube end fitting has a 16 degree angle. The guy who helped me out recommended switching this fitting out to a straight fitting which he did. He said for anyone else ordering these, simply put "Convert to 10mm straight ends" in the comments section of the order, or call and tell them. He said it is no problem.

Here are pics of my ends:

Ordered mine, put a comment about straight ends. Should be delivered on Friday, I`ll update this post when I install it.

delivered today, straight ends, will install in a few
That was easiest part to swap- period. someone better hold that heavy door, it took me whooping 2 minutes to switch both sides, stock strats has 16 degree ends so straight ends is not necessary, works fine though. I think it's a little bit stiffer vs stock not a whole lot to notice though. i lhang two jars of oil 9lb 5oz each and it's holds open, so sound deadening should not be a problem unless you put 30 lb of deadener and very heavy speakers, `i have jl audio evolution in there, medium sized 6,5" components.
