Pretty proud of this one. Seeing as how my swing out and spare tire now covered my factory backup camera, I decided to add a new aftermarket one instead of relocating the factory one.

I used an Alpine HCE-155 camera and Alpine's KTX-C10LP license plate holder which also serves as the mount for the camera. Wiring was really not that bad. Simply pulling the nav unit, locating the OEM Video + and Video - inputs, cutting them, and splicing in the new video cable.

I'm starving so I gotta run, if you would like more details, lemme know and I will post more.

Now that this is done, I have a 4 way mobil video switch unit I can use to integrate a front camera, and DVD player in combination with the "anytime reverse camera" mod. That is for another day...

Was this camera compatible with the stock head unit or did you need a voltage converter?

For the HAM install definitely look at Proclips. They are like RAM Mounts but only clip into the dash gaps and don't require drilling. I'll post a pic of mine when I get home tonight.
 
Just spent about an hour cruising through your entire build thread. Ridiculous. Fine work man. Hope to see you around SD and give you a thumbs up! Would love to cruise out to ocotillo wells for a trip one of these days. It's been a while. Last time I was out there was for a bachelor party, and it involved lots of guns, propane tanks, gasoline, about 50 airbag units and a lot of alcohol. I'm truly amazed I'm still alive. Again, amazing stuff you did with your rig.
 
So I found your thread while researching the 10-11 5th gen trail model and I told my wife all about it and we went and looked at one today BUT it was $27k and the wife says "What could you do to your truck for $27k?" DAMN wife got me to thinking now lol - Incidentally I have a 96 limited :)

Cool build though, got me thinking A LOT!

Howdy brother,

I'm still alive and well. I've been seriously MIA from the forum for a while... New career with odd work hours and lots of overtime opportunities, my wife made me a beautiful baby girl, and a new house (read, serious fixer-upper). So my time has been spread very thin but I am starting to become a bit more free.

Couple updates on the rig. She just clicked over 96,000 miles and got a new set of Hankook Dynapro Mt 285/70 17's. I got exactly 70,000 miles out of the last set, doing a 5-tire rotation schedule every 10k miles. To say I like those tires is an understatement. Other than that, I am finally getting the truck re-geared to 4.56's next week, and finally getting around to re-doing my wiring with Switch pro's panel (Switch Pros - Home).

I pulled the Icon's off the front and had them re-built after almost 90k miles. New shafts and new seals and they are good to go. Looking forward to making a couple desert trips before it gets too hot! Hope everyone is well, I will be stopping by more often. Cheers!:high5:
 
Interested in the tank, I didn't see the actually fill hole on the tank? Maybe I missed it? I know you used a separate fill from the factory so did it fill into hole on the side and if so what size is the hole? Thanks!

The fact that Toyota took it upon themselves to lock out many of the capabilities of our factory nav systems always annoyed me. Now, not even you passenger can input a destination address, search for POI's etc. Very annoying.

In the past, Toyota and other nav. unit manufacturers made it easy for us to bypass this lock out by simply grounding out a wire that was supposed to be connected to the parking brake. Now, they have gotten smarter and the lock out feature is facilitated by the vehicle speed sensor and GPS - slightly harder to bypass.

One of our members here on the board (J.A.) makes a nifty little "black box" utilizing a 555 Timer to intercept the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) signal and outputs an artificial VSS signal that shows the car as going less the 5 km/h which is the cutoff for the nav lockout. Installation is cake - just pull the nav unit, find the G18 Grey plug, find wire #3 which is a sky blue 24 gauge wire, snip it in half - splice in the input and output to the correct locations on the black box, ground the box, and wire it to switched power. Now, not matter how fast you are going, just flip a switch and you regain all usability of your nav system so your passenger can input destinations etc.

Long story brother.... the short version is life took off on me. Changed jobs, got married shortly after, bought a house (MAJOR fixer upper....), had a kid in September 2015, and have another one due July of this year.

LOL. Some day I will finish the little things left on my truck. I still need to re- gear and finish some electrical stuff. Other than that, the T4R is the best vehicle I have ever owned. 112K miles now and no issues whatsoever, and I have not been easy on her. Thousands of miles of rough trails, desert, snow, rocks, etc.

As many of you have also experienced, my rear hatch gas struts blew out a month or so ago. I spent the last few weeks searching for a replacement solution that would offer more lift to accommodation the Gobi Ladder and be as close of a direct "snap on" replacement as possible.

Well.... I FOUND IT!!!!!

After ordering 3 different pairs of struts with no luck, I came upon LiftSupportsDepot.com One of the very helpful employees invited me to stop by so we could try out a few different struts and see which one worked.

Those with the Gobi Ladder, here is what you want:

Lift Supports

When you order, you must put in the comments section the following: "Convert to 10mm straight ends"

Other than that, they give the hatch the perfect amount of lift, they are an easy upgrade or replacement of yours are already blown, and best of all, thy are DIRT CHEAP!!!! How does $17 / each sound!

Anywho. Thought I would share, I am happy to have my hatch back up and functional again, I got tired of resting it on my head as I grab my crap out of the back. :boxer:

they now have a part number for our exact application in case someone else comes across this forum pm3489. it even lists gobi rack in the description. it is $50.00 for the pair.
