Socket Sizes

What are the most common sockets sizes (1989 4runner) or a complete list of sizes needed to complete a set that would do every bolt on the Runner. I would rather buy the sizes needed then a set with a bunch i don't need.
Is there any diagrams that show the bolt sizes? I looked in the FSM and could not find it.


I was looking at the Spline sockets.
Does anyone have an opinion on this type of socket?

There's lots of 19mm on the front suspension hardware.

Also a 54mm or 2 1/8 for the hub nut.

If you go to sears or lowes and just buy a basic set it will be cheaper than buying individual tools. You'll want 1/4", 3/8 and 1/2 drive sockets, extensions, wobble joints, wrenches, pliers, etc.
 
Has anyone used the spline sockets.

Stay away from them. You have a good chance of stripping out your hardware with them. They don't get a good bite on the full edge of the bolt head. They only grip the last 1/16th" or so of the pointed edge. A spline socket is designed to work with most types of hardware (E-Torx, 6pt, 12pt, squared, etc.). The problem with that is each type of hardware is different so they cannot make one socket to fit each type perfectly and then you end up stripping out hardware that is tight or in a bad angle. With a 6pt socket, it will hold on to almost all of the bolt's edge surface as long as it's used on a 6pt bolt head. 99% of all the automotive bolts and nuts are a 6pt socket.

Here's my theory: a 6 pt should be used on all sockets (some bolts you have to have a 12pt) because the ratchet wrench can spin and make room for the 6pt socket to go on the hardware. Wrenches should be 12pt because you're more likely to be limited on room to move the tool if you're forced to use a wrench.

What this guy said. I only use 6 pt unless I misplaced one then I'll use 12pt in desperation
