Sold But Not Forgotten

Today I bid farewell to my beloved 96 4Runner. Due to unfortunate family events, I had to sell her to my brother. He was in an accident earlier this week and totaled his Camaro so I am giving him my runner. Better to keep it in the family then to sell it to some stranger. His eye has been on it anyway lol. I will be changing things up and getting an XJ as my next toy, but don't worry, I will still be around!

My brother already has big plans for it, so I'm hoping he will join here and create the build thread that I never started. lol

I'll never say it's better than a 3rd gen, but an XJ Cherokee is an excellent vehicle. Any Jeep with the 4 liter for that matter. Enjoy it.

You guys crack me up lol. I never would've thought I would consider getting a Jeep of all things, but I was like hell, it might be fun to change it up and get something different. Especially if it has solid axles.

I'm looking at two right now. One is a super clean 98 with a 4" lift, 35s, 4.10s, detroit rear locker, swingout rear bumper with full spare and Rusty's fender armor and all maintenance done on it for 6k.

The other is a fully built 96 with 37s (has 2 sets of tires he'll throw in plus full spare), 3/4 ton axles out of an 80s F250, 6.5" long travel lift, bumpers all around, winch, exo cage, 4.88s with lockers in both axles. You can tell its been abused though just from the photos, although that's not a huge deal to me as I won't be daily driving it. The thing that concerns me with this is he said the #6 piston was replaced due to it being "loose" after hearing some knocking. I don't see how a piston would just be loose though, I could see a connecting rod being loose though. Also, the AC doesn't work as he said he started an LS swap but never finished it and that's a necessity for me. Wanting 5k.

Unless you're already planning on swapping the engine (and potentially the drivetrain), I'd defiantly pass on the 96. No way I'd want a rig that was someone's beat up toy unless they practically gave it to me. The first one looks like they built it and never used it.

The 4.0 Inline 6 is most definitely a bomb proof motor.

My 95 ZJ had 306k miles on it when I sold it and it never once failed me. I saw it for sale on facebook a few months ago and it was up to 320k miles and still chugging along....

Unfortunately just about every other thing on that Jeep was broken like:

A couple window motors
The AC
The heat
Parking brake never worked....ever
Death wobble (if you own a jeep, you know what death wobble is)
The entire front end
Cruise control
And so on and so on...

I've owned a few ZJ Grand Cherokees, those straight 6 engines are pretty simple to work on and will run forever. The rest of the drivetrain however, not so much LOL. Did experience death wobble in one of them,so bad I had to pull over when it happened,once I replaced the steering stabilizer it was safe to drive.

[MENTION=136902]thecole1098[/MENTION] that "loose piston" could be a spun main bearing. Those engines use a 2-piece rear main seal, replacing them required just pulling the oil pan off then removing the rearmost main bearing cap to slide the upper half of the seal in. Someone may have changed the rear main seal and didn't properly retorque the cap down.

I had an XJ on 33s. I sold it because the front left “frame” had almost an inch of deflection from turning the wheels lock to lock. They are great vehicles besides that unibody garbage.

I grew up riding in my dad's Grand Cherokee, he drove that thing all over the country on hunting trips. He sold it when it had 320k miles on and it STILL ran great and looked decent too, despite us kids always making a mess in the back seat.

Probably that last reliable engine Jeep made. I still see a lot of them on the road around here in CA, though most have been turned into crawlers.

Frame stiffeners will help to allievate that. Not completely get rid of it, but help a shit ton.
