Soliciting opinions/facts re major fluid changes

Here’s my maintenance schedule I have written out, and have been following. Truck gas 106k miles on it now and I have now done every single thing on this list but the spark plugs, some things several times now. All have been done in my garage with jack, jack stands and basic tools.

pDubs, when you say "Flush" do you mean full drain and refill? I'm debating taking her to the dealership and letting them use the machine to flush it or just swap out the fluids in my garage.

The more I research transmission fluid changes and flushes the more I think about just draining and refilling the pan 3 or 4 times over 10-20K miles and calling her good. So many contradicting opinions and experiences with drains and flushes. For the record, I'm at 92K right now, original fluid.

I guess "flush" was a bad word in this scenario, as I didn't do the machine way. I have read that's not the best idea. I did a full drain and fill using this thread:
DIY: Full Flush for Automatic Transmission | Tacoma World

I ended up using almost 12 quarts exactly: Amazon.com: TOYOTA 00289-ATFWS World Standard AUTOM: Automotive

Some people also skip doing the entire thing, and just do the first few steps, then the end. Another thread on that way here: How to Drain/Refill Automatic Transmission | Tacoma World

I've been told to change (drain/fill) 5 quarts of TF every 50,000 miles (after first change at 100,000 miles). Is that correct for a Toyota 4runner / 2005 with 150,000 miles?

TF done by dealer at 100,000 miles. They did 5 quart D/F (on invoice). I bought the truck new from them!

Conventional Oil done at 5000 miles.

For what it's worth, I just rolled over 47k miles and have performed a host of maintenance items (minimal driving right now, so perfect time to handle it right?) over the last few thousand miles:

- OCI for engine/filter and prop shaft grease @ 5k mile intervals
- Performed drain and fill for all differentials and transmission
- Rear diff was surprisingly clean, some debris on magnet
- Front diff was filthy but with less debris on magnet
- Transfer case was squeaky clean
- Transmission fluid was dirty. All 4 magnets had a small amount of material on them, but nothing that gave me much pause.
- Multiple cycles of pump out/pour in new fluid for the power steering
- Likely to do a brake fluid flush in the near term as well. Fluid in reservoir still appears clean/clear

Overall I feel better knowing I've done everything on the list. My transmission is shifting much smoother (closer to when it was brand new) compared to before. It had become a little more firm over the last 15k or so miles as it's worn in.

Would I do it all again given the time/money investment? Absolutely. I plan on keeping the truck for a long time. If I were planning on trading it in at 100k miles, I'd be a lot less inclined to do anything but the oil changes/prop shafts. If you're wanting to be more budget conscious, the rear diff and transmission are likely the biggest bang for the buck and most frequent wear items. If you're not 100% confident in your abilities, I'd recommend skipping the transmission fluid - It's a bit more complicated than a simple drain/fill if you want to do it per the book.

As for me, I'll likely be repeating this same procedure when I get close to 100k. YMMV.

Did you replace the crush rings? I'm still hoping someone has the up-to-date list of the part numbers for them (for a Gen 5)! Specifically for the diffs and the xfr case.

I did - all crush washers and O-rings were replaced when I did my fluid changes. I used the part numbers in the following thread:

DIY maintenance quick reference

Everything listed there led me to the right part numbers for the installation on all components.

This is super helpful. Thanks a ton!

I will add a word of caution! We had our fluids checked by a national oil-change chain. The "technician" did not replace or tighten the drain plug on the differential properly. Result: 2800 miles later, major failure of rear end (gears worn smooth, axle WELDED in place, stranded in area of SE OR and NE CA with no cell reception). 100 mile + towing charge (AAA covered it!), month at a dealer, for a cost of $7500.00! Because service was not performed by Toyota, it was not covered by the power train warranty!!!!!

Fortunately, the oil service firm honored our claim and is ending us a check in a few days (We just got the rig back last weekend!)

You gotta wonder how much money those places make that they can afford to pay those bills after their monkeys screw up something simple and cheap that they made like $50 on.
