Alright,

Some I'm pretty decent when it comes to Audio. I'm no expert but I do hold my own. So I was looking at Single Dens(Alpine, or Pioneer most likely) to put into the 99 Limited.

So the first questions is this? Dose the Limited have a JBL Speakers from the factory for this year? It has the 6 disk in the back and for a factory system it is not bad sounding.

I was told by the sale rep in Car audio that this truck needs some special adapter to work with the stock speaker? :wtf:

I asked him if he is talking about a cross over? He stated that it was an interface you need once you change the head.All I want to do is a head unit and a sub in the back. The stock mid's and high's are pretty good in this truck.

I'm calling BS but I wanted to run this by you guys.

I don't know about a special adapter, but when I installed a Kenwood into mine I had to remove the stock amplifier completely and plug the cords that went into the stock amplifier into a wiring harness that then plugs into the Kenwood.

ditto -just put my jvc arsenal in from crutchfield. came with harness and bracket. had to remove stock amp. sounds like BS. easiest stereo install I've ever done. only problem I have is the power antenna stays up even when I'm listening to the USB drive. Need to install a rocker switch in-line to manually retract it for trail crawling -

For an aftermarket head unit, all that is needed is the wiring harness for toyota vehicles, and your head unit.

You will tear out the limited stock unit + stock amp. You can hook up a small sub to a head unit..

for example my pioneer 6400bt can use a max 70 w .5 ohm sub plugged into the RCA output.

That is definitely a load of BS... all that 's needed is a wire harness adapter and a dash kit. I've done many-a-install and the runner was by far the easiest. 4 hours for a full system (head-unit, speakers, and subs with amp). if you're anywhere near littleton, co, I'm more than happy to help... i'm also in castle rock and parker quite frequently.

and on a side note...

Definitely just sounds like you wired the antenna up to the rms power out line for the amp. just a simple wire mix up... i've had my fair share. just find the antenna wire on the adapter side of the harness, and re splice to the ant. out on the head side. (unless you want to go through the hassle of wiring up a switch for it)

I think that is what the salesman means. You need a wiring adapter harness to connect the new HU to the stock speakers.

do you think he may be referring to using the stock amp along with the aftermarket unit?? If so I am sure that would require some sort of adapter.

As others have stated, just pull the factory unit and the factory amp and use a harness adapter and your golden.

Stock amp is just behind the stereo, i actually just disconnected it didn't even take it out. I understand that one, i have the sony with the ipod dock inside and bluetooth for my phone, i'm very happy with it except i did lose my cd player. and it sounds like a good setup, ported or sealed box? and are/have you replaced the speakers? and what are you looking for in a head? single din? double? simple or touch screen? and how much are you looking to spend? crutchfield has been a great resource for me :thumb3:

The factory amplifier is pretty much behind the ash tray kind of. It's pretty hard to miss once you get the plastic trim out.

I love my Kenwood, but honestly you can't go wrong as long as you choose a major brand name.

Thanks Conner- I was thinking signal den because I was thinking about a CB radio and having the extra room would be nice. Oh, I love Crutchfield. I have been all over it and about every other place you can think of. I just like word of mouth. You can never beat that over some dorks professional opinion on something he would in most cases not buy anyhow.

I would like to keep the stock speakers because they seems to do well. I will not really know until I get an aftermarket head hooked up to them. I'm a huge fan of Phoenix Gold audio. There stuff is just BAD and it is very clean audio and that is what I'm after. Clean sound not shit that will rattle the widows out of the truck.

Where are you buying your Phoenix gold stuff from? They have been out of business for awhile.
The sales guy was probably thinking of BS you have to do on a lot of newer cars to bypass the amp you literally have to run new speaker wires. That's not the case with our rigs just get the harness adapter should be the same from 85-03 and pull the factory headunit out pull the factory amp out should all look like something pictured below. Then just plug the harness adapter in take the metal brackets off factory stereo and put them on the new one then your done pretty much.
As for factory speakers being jbl I doubt it mine have no markings I upgraded my whole system the last couple days with hertz door speakers jl 1000.1 slash amp and Phoenix gold comp 10.
Side note if you liked PG stuff check out Exile the guy who runs this company is the same guy who designed pg stuff.

You don't even need the harness, but I highly recommend it. You can splice directly into the wires, but the harness will make the same job 100x easier

It will say that it does not fit your 4-runner, but they work just fine. I bought a Scosche adapter for the Pioneer radio that plugged directly into the radio and then into the Toyota Harness, but I haven't seen that harness for any other radios.

For anyone who reads this later.... Don't use the stock amplifier with an aftermarket head unit. It sounds like shit. Go ahead, ask me how I know.

Same prices but far better service and tech support.

I have done everything to my car stereo. There are no factory components left besides the antenna. I ran new power, ground, and speaker wire.

It's a KD-HDR52. It was $120 from Crutchfield with harness. I can snap some pics if ya need me to. Wanted the Arsenal model my brother has (you can change the face light colors on his). Sadly, they are no more. I don't rightly care about cosmetics, just wanted music that works and doesn't skip. It fit right in there. Did zero trimming on dashboard plastic. The faceplate is a little tight getting it on and off at first. After a while it goes on nice and smooth. Just have to force it a few times. Sounds great and works great. Like I said, the power antenna thing is a small issue but can be rectified.

Don't know if I did this quote function correctly, but I don't thinks we wired the rms incorrectly. We soldered everything to spec, then plugged the harness in. The stock stereo would detract the antenna if you inserted a CD. I still haven't tried this with my new HU, but it doesn't do it when listening to muzak on the USB port. I still have some experimenting to do, but I'm willing to bet bet the new HU won't do it when reading the thumb drive. Any advice? I have time (and beer) to install an in-line toggle switch (and those empty slots by the E-lock button) to put stuff in. My desire is to go wheelin' and not have my muzak skip or have the antenna ripped off -
