Noob here:
Short story about how I fixed my Uncles friends 99 4-runner.
When he flat bedded it over here about 10 months ago, it was running like junk. He didn't leave any cash, nor parts. I tried to start it up, but the battery was dead as a door nail.
About a month ago, I called dude and said, "Hey buddy, do you want me to fix that truck?"
I told him I need spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, and a battery. So yesterday he brought all the stuff. I took off the air filter box and stuff
So I installed the battery, just to see how the truck was running. It ran like crap. The Idle was high as hell for about 10 min. and never went down. There was no check engine light- what so ever- But the truck felt like it was missing. It had no power and was bucking and popping.
First thing I did was look at the spark plug wires. I checked on this forum to make sure the wires were in the right order. (they were)
Then, I took off the air filter box and stuff. I looked in the throttle body to see how dirty it was. It was so dirty that the throttle blade couldn't close all the way. I didn't have anything to clean the throttle body with, so I decided to use paint thinner on a rag. It worked real good. (super good)
Next, I unscrewed the MAF and cleaned every piece of metal in there with the paint thinner. I used a q-tip and and cleaned the metal parts inside. (I know paint thinner is not MAF cleaner, but It wasn't my truck)
When I pulled the plugs and wires off, I noticed that the 3 spark plug wires (not the coil wires) had spots where the burn thru. The spark plug "fire" was coming thru the rubber.
I swapped the old plugs (6) and (3) wires and the truck runs like a new car.:guitar3:
The truck has 167,000 miles on it.
I called him 20 mins ago and said the truck is fixxed.
He said my wife will be super happy.
