Something doesnt seem right

So ive been noticing that when I am on a hill (steep or not) I start rolling back as if I have a Manual Transmission. Since its an automatic should I NOT be rolling back like that? I know in all my other automatics I had this never happened.

In advance sorry for the lack of terminology, not sure how to explain in mechanical terms

It has been bugging me so help is very appreciated

I have a 2001 SR5 4wd w/ central diff locker

Nope no other issues with my transmission at all..

Have any more info? Is it like a runaway rolling back, no tension at all? How steep is the hill? Even autos will roll back if it's steep enough.

I've got an auto and mine does that too. Though, like brian4t said, it has increasing tension as it rolls back.

it is like a runaway rolling back with no tension at all and the hill doesnt have to be that steep..

If I stop on a hill and then let my foot off the brake mine will roll back. I though it was normal.

Sounds like a "Parking Pawl (pin)" has worn out possibly.

Maybe motor or tranny mounts loose not letting the pawl engage fully? Thats is just a wild guess don't know for sure if loose mounts would do that on a 4Runner.

DOH, Never mind, you mean when you are in drive, yeah thats normal.

mine does it to, it's normal on Toyotas. Like you, none of my other cars did it. Just use the brake when you are on a hill. It may be annoying for a short period of time but it will be second nature soon.

You will notice the 4runners have a low idle RPM. Most are at 700. That is a lower idle than domistic cars. I trust Toyota and how they build these. I assume the lower idle helps limit transmission wear and tear. Just a thought.

How long have you had your 4runner? Has it rolled back the whole time you've had it or is this new behavior?

Perfectly normal. About every automobile does it. If you are facing forward down an incline with it in reverse, it will roll forward on you too without giving it any gas.

Its the torque converter not spinning fast enough at an idle in gear to keep the car in one spot.

Just don't hold the vehicle on in incline in gear while giving it some gas to keep it from rolling. That's how you cook the fluid in a transmission. Always use the brakes.

Thanks thats what ive been doing I thought it was just me having that but I guess its normal.. Just wanted to clear it up
