Sometimes I think about selling

I need something slightly larger , I may look for a Tahoe or Yukon used 03-06.

Need another vehicle and wife wont drive 4R in winter because of the VSC.

Not sure what to do , I'm going to do a little shopping tomorrow see what's out there. I have been looking for quite a while but will be a little more serious to explore my options.

Hmmm... If I were going to buy a Tahoe, it would have to be a new model because they look really nice now.

But I'm a bit confused about your comment about VSC and your wife. VSC can be a huge asset in snow because it helps keep the vehicle under control. Why would your wife not want to drive it in the winter season?

I drive my dad around a lot because of his age and a few aliments, he is 6'11" and 320 ,,,,,need I say more .

Yes , Even Steven VSC has it good point , but last year she (wife) pulled out onto a road with plenty of space , it was snow and ice covered , he ( the guy behind her ) was going to fast (probably) and my wife could not accelerate because it kept shutting the power down , the truck behind her managed to hit the gravel shoulder and ditch his truck . He was ok , some damage to his truck , but I thank him for avoiding ramming into the wife. It could have easily killed her. From the point the incident happened was about 200 feet from where she pulled out , so there was plenty of time. Another time that happened and she had to take the ditch. It has happened to me too , but I know enough to keep the center dif locked.

VSC is wonderful driving down the hiway when its wet , snow covered , slippery. Other than that it is a safety hazard and can be dangerous. Her Ford Escape with the auto ( kick in 4wd feature ) and a 4high locked feature is much safer in snow and ice conditions IMO , since I've driven both frequently in those conditions.

My personal driving habits in snow are VSC on while highway rural road driving , driving stop and go , pulling out into traffic , with snow , my diff. must be locked for safety reasons .

The ATRAC system is excellent and would not want to be without it at all. The VSC can be very dangerous , but has a very few times where it is useful,IMO. Hence most likely why they now have a switch to disable it.

As far as the Tahoe/Yukon goes , the new ones look nice , but I'd rather buy a 2-3 year old one for less than half the price if a new one.

I do love my 4R a lot , best truck I ever had !!! Best for off road....ect.... Worst downfall is the VSC....without a doubt !! After 2 winters of driving I have yet to see it be an asset.

Get a 2003 or newer Land Cruiser. I just got an 03 to add to the Toy fleet and it is AWESOME.

I would love to , but to much cash. I'm also going to look at a Sequoia. There is a white one around here with like a 2" spacer lift , looks sweet . It has a Randy Ellis light bar on it . looks cool, although it always full of mud , I don't know where he wheels around here that I have not been , I'll have to tail him .....lol

Falls,

In the situation you described, I don't think it was VSC not allowing her to accelerate....I think it was ATRAC.

My understanding of VSC isn't the best, but wouldn't you just spin out if VSC was off? Seems to me if VSC was such a safety hazard, the industry wouldn't be implementing it within the next few years.

Hmmmm! I'm wondering why Toyota decided to install a defeat switch for the "VSC" on the 2008 model.

I'm sure this switch will be on the "all new" 2009 model year also. I hope Toyota doesn't mess up the Runner dynamics on this new 5th generation model. My 23 yr old car is starting to lean toward the junk yard. I need it to hold on for just ONE more year--until the 2009 model gets here.
:)

Not sure how much you are planning to spend but I got mine down here in South Florida for $26900. It is a 2003 with 64K on the odo and it is M.I.N.T. Got it from a large dealership. It even has NAV. I am VERY happy. Highly recommend the LC.

When I feel VSC/ATRAC kicking in like you mentioned (pulling onto a street from a sidestreet), I just jam on the accelerator even more and even though it tries to fight you it'll resume like normal when you've regained traction.

But why when the diff is locked , and ATRAC is on and VSC is off I can go like hell a and not have a power shut down.

Maybe I'm mis understanding.

And why would the put a VSC cut off switch on the new ones ? Maybe people *****ed abut it . I've never had a problem roosting up all 4 tires with ATrac.

I do think the 4x4 system is excellent on the 4r , but do think that shut down of power , what ever it maybe is a hazard.

Falls - if you do decide to opt for the GM route, go for a Yukon over the Tahoe. For some reason, even though these are built side by side, GMC has a higher quality rating than Chevrolet for the same trucks. My wife's '00 Yukon has 150k and still going strong. No leaks, doesn't burn a drop of oil and the tranny is still as strong as ever. Had to replace one "autoride" shock and a windshield washer tank over the last 7 years. Still on the original brake rotors (pads have been changed twice). Keep in mind, you will lose some safety features and take a moderate hit in MPG. Yukon with a 5.3L gets about 14-15 city, maybe 20 on the highway. Don't get any engine smaller than the 5.3L.

I know how you feel about the VSC/TRAC issue. I've almost been tagged a couple of times trying to pull out into traffic and accelerate on slippery surfaces. I am hoping better tires will help this (going for BFG AT KO's this fall).

Just unplug the plug under the master cylinder under the hood. This will disable VSC and ATRAC, the only down side is it disables ABS for braking.

As for larger size, if you go with the Tahoe let me know......I'm a wealth of useless knowledge when it comes to the 99-06 GM fullsize body style.....:D

To be frank, it sounds like your wife needs to learn how to drive. If she is risking it all in order to pull out in front of a large oncoming truck in slick conditions, it is not the cars fault. If she does not tone down her driving, she will get herself in another life or death situation, regardless of the vehicle she is driving.

Maybe take the keys away from her for a few weeks? :D

Don't you think that's a little harsh? There are situations where you need to enter traffic on slippery surfaces. With some of the road manners people exhibit these days, waiting for some driver to let you go in front of them would have you sitting in one spot for 10-15 minutes while traffic backs up behind you.

She drives just fine and pretty conservative , she also has had many 4wd trucks/Suvs. She is good at driving and a smart driver. Just not used to the truck making the decisions and not her.

As I wrote previously , she had about 200 feet , there was no other vehicles on the road . it was not like trying to pull out in traffic because she was in a hurry , she's not like that at all.

Hey if she can handle roostin my 520 hp Cobra on occasion , she's has my vote :)

X2

Plus there are situations when you need to spin the wheels, especially during the winter, to clean the teads and gain traction.

Having complete control of your vehicle, not the vehicle having complete control of you, is not poor driving. Having a truck with no traction control at all (other than a rear locker) I know exactly what it is going to do in any given situation....with traction control you never 'really' know what your vehicle will do.....is it going to cut all power.......is it going to buzz at me......is it going to limit the power to the wheels......:bash:

I know how to drive......I don't need my Toyota tell me how to drive...... :bigok:

Falls, why not just upgrade to the '08 model with the VSC OFF switch??

If you want bigger, then get a Jeep Commander! Now, before you think that i am crazy, remember that you can get a lot of discounts on these Commanders. I am sure that you can get one below invoice with good financing. The 3rd row seating is a bit tight. Resale value may stink in the future because Jeep is planning on discontinuing it after 2009. With it's 4wd system (QuadraDrive II), decent ground and underbelly clearance, good engine power, it can keep up with the 4runner through most stuff. I think that the Commander looks good inside and out, but others may disagree. It's probably more off-road capable than any Tahoe or Yukons. Don't forget about Jeep (and Chrysler/Dodge) LIFETIME POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. I am not sure if it has a VSC OFF switch, but it's a truck that you should look into. The Powertrain warranty covers transmission, transfer case, driveshaft, axles, and engine stuff...so, it should give you some piece of mind if you plan on keeping it a long time. (Remember, this powertrain warranty is for the FIRST owner only; therefore, resale value still stinks because this warranty is void once you sell it.)
