Sometimes I think about selling

Also remember GM has the 5yr/100,000 mile warranty and I know for a fact the Tahoe will have a push button 4wd system that will only have Traction Control if you are in 4wd and I believe the system has a Traction Control 4wd and a regular 4wd.

I love being the.......:satan: :biggrin2:

4WD is a push button (rather than a turn of a knob), and quite a few of the Tahoes/Yukons came with an LSD in the back (not sure about when the traction control systems went into place in GM's history). The 4WD system is a 2WD, Auto 4WD (auto switching when you are on wet pavement), 4WD HI, N, and 4WD LO. So you will gain a couple of modes, one of which you may never use (N) unless you tow behind a camper (which cannot be done in a 4runner).

New Runner owner here and I just want to make sure I understand all this.

Engaging 4WD does not disable VSC and ATRAC. But engaging the 4WD and locking the center differential does disable these features. Is this correct?

What's the problem exactly with VSC and ATRAC? They seem like good safety features.

Thanks.

You are correct. The issue arises on wet pavement or slippery conditions when you want wheel spin to build momentum, the VSC/TRAC system will shut down power (by applying the brakes to certain wheels) in order to regain traction thinking it is an out of control situation. Obviously there has been enough complaints (or safety issues) that Toyota finally installed a VSC cutoff switch in the 2008 models. Normally these are very good safety features, but in certain cases (traffic situations in this example) they can be dangerous. Having really good tires helps the situation a lot. Revos and the stock Dunlops seem to have problems on wet pavement especially.

So why not lock the center diff? If you are on dry pavement and turning onto wet pavement, you will bind the gears as you turn. You cannot engage the center diff while in motion, so you would need to stop the vehicle (which kinda defeats the purpose in this case).

Thanks for the explaination , Kevin. If this is a problem, I wonder if Toyota is going to produce a techical bulletin on adding VSC OFF to pre-2008 Runners.

I need something slightly larger , I may look for a Tahoe or Yukon used 03-06.

Need another vehicle and wife wont drive 4R in winter because of the VSC.

Not sure what to do , I'm going to do a little shopping tomorrow see what's out there. I have been looking for quite a while but will be a little more serious to explore my options.

Falls, I think you would miss your 4Runner. Think about how fun it is to drive, and how solid it feels. You're not going to find that in any GM product. I drive a new Tahoe, and also a Silverado (company cars) everyday, and they are, in my opinion, poor products, typical GM. Very sloppy to drive/handle, compared to the 4Runner. The Tahoe does offer more interior room.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do. :)

Dont get me wrong I love the 4R and its abilities and off road capability.

Locking the center diff. only disables VSC , not the Atrac. The Atrac does not cut the power off completely it is the VSC that does that and also brakes for you.

Due to resale value and the ungody ugliness of the commander I would not get one , it's really not a full size vehicle either.

I personally , like someone above mentioned would rather drive my truck that it take over my driving . I'm not going to trade it in for an 08 either , that would defeat my purpose of what I orig. wanted to do and that is be able to take my dad on trips ect.... more comfortably. After looking at some vehicles today , I will probably end up keeping the 4R. I stopped at the dealer and asked about the switch , and they are also checking into extended seat tracks that will enable the pass. seat to go back a couple inches.

I did find a nice black Sequoia that I liked and yes it does have a VSC off switch.....lol. To new and to much $$ wanted . Nice size though but after driving so much in the 4R it feels big and bulky .... obviously .

I thought that when you locked the center diff, you turned off VSC, but ATRAC still worked, which is correct? On a 4WD V6.

Thanks

You are correct, locking the center diff turns off VSC. ATRAC will still be on. One benefit of disabling VSC is it will keep the computer from cutting your throttle. However, ATRAC will still apply brakes to spinning wheels, but with VSC disabled you can apply heavy throttle to overcome the brakes.

I would love to , but to much cash. I'm also going to look at a Sequoia. There is a white one around here with like a 2" spacer lift , looks sweet . It has a Randy Ellis light bar on it . looks cool, although it always full of mud , I don't know where he wheels around here that I have not been , I'll have to tail him .....lol

I know I wanted a sequoia after I saw a local one here, I call it the "Sickoia"

You have to remember that the Sequoia will only allow you to shut off the VSC when in 4wd, it will not allow shut off in 2wd......:bash:

At least that's the way it is on my dad's '01.....and the VSC on his '01 is much worse than the VSC on my '03 4Runner.....

Good to know , having the VSC would be fine in 2wd , since in a snow storm I'd be in 4wd anyway and could shut it off.

Jeep Commander, Thai? Are you kidding me? A Jeep Commander is no bigger than our 4Runners. They are nearly identical in size. And they even seem a bit tighter on the inside to me, but that's only my "seat of the pants" impression when I'm in my cousin's Commander Limited.

See what happens is that when we get snow here they plow the hiway , but the cross sections ( where you would have to cross northbound lanes to get into the southbound lanes ) there is snow piled up so deep there you usually can coast your way into it , but trying to start out and get out of it on the road is where the problem comes in . You need to be locked !! Then the Atrac does its thing ( which is awesome ) and your off.

When I have been driving on snow/ice covered roads ( hiway or rural or country) and not having to cross the median strip , just crusing along the VSC can save your butt and keep you straight. You almost have to let go of everything and let it do its thing. I don't like that ! but it is what it is.

As far the the 4R 4x4 system , I think its awesome with the ATRAC , but not being able to turn off the VSC is a drawback. Being able to disable the ATRAC to would be a bonus too , but the throttle can over ride the brakes control anyway.

Like I said the only reason I was looking at a used Tahoe/Yukon is for the room for my dad. Also a BIG factor is that they hold crap for resale and can get a used one a few years old for half the price with only 30-40K on it .....pretty sad , but true.

I really have not been impressed by anything I saw or drove so far, compared to the 4R . I'm just looking around at options , probably end up keeping the 4R which is not a bad thing at all.

Just got to figure out how to get dad to fit in the 4R better.....lol. I'm so glad I did not inherit that 6'11" frame and weight. He's never been fat , always pretty muscular and used to weigh in at 365lbs/6'11''. Big , big guy. Great father too. It's pretty sad that at my age (45) my 70y/o dad could put me through the wall......lol.

And if I just kept the 4R then I'll have to put my 1" leveling kit on before winter.

I hear you.....but his is so bad that if your driving around after a snow and your back wheels are in some slush and you try to pull out into traffic, it will shut down all power to the rear wheels and start buzzing......it is really bad......:bash:

WOW and I though the 4R's was sensitive.

your dad's 6-11 over 300 and if your anything within 6" and 100 lbs. of him, driving a runner has got to be painful, painful, painful.

How about the Armada? Plenty of size, power and you can option it up from the mid 30-s to high 40's.

I'm curious what the dealer's feedback was about the VSC off switch? Did they say they could do it or are they looking into it? I mentioned in another thread that I was going to look into that but haven't have the time just yet. I'll have to call around in the next couple of days to find out. I'd really like to have that done (if it can be done) before winter hits.
