Hello everyone. I am selling my 94 toyota mr2 this weekend and have made up my mind to get a 3rd gen 4runner. I am going to miss my mr2 dearly however i cant take it out to prerun the desert races i am involved in and I cannot fit my gf and her little one in it so its time for something new.
Just a couple questions as a newb. I have read quite a bit over the past few days since deciding to go with a 4runner but am still curious on a few things.
What year is most reccomended between 96-2001? 2000 and 2001's are most likely out of the question due to price but you never know.
What are things i should look for when buying one (i know all the typical things to look for on a vehicle but wondering if there are any specific issues on the 4runners)
Now here is one I will probably get flammed for but i gotta ask since there are differing opinions. I have the oppertunity to pick up a 1st gen trd supercharger kit with everything except for the belt for $650. It was rebuilt and has 0 miles since the rebuild. I have read that some people say you have to have fuel mods and some say you dont. I will not be hot rodding this other than the occasional "get some" out in the desert prerunning but it will also be my daily driver. Will I be fine running it without the mods as just a cruiser 80% of the time or is it absolutly necissary to get the fuel mods? I will be doing the fuel mods at some near point in the future however if I get the kit and a decent 4runner, I will be strapped on cash for a few months.
I will also be doing the tundra brake upgrade as one of the first things on my list so any input on that other than what has been covered?
Btw I have been working on cars for over 12 years and have done everything from simple brake changes to engine rebuilds, to full on frame building (on our old 1600 buggy and our new class 10 buggy) so no need to break everything into simplistics for me. lol
Any other advice or input would be greatly appricated and you will all be seeing much more of me around here. (i have over 3000 posts on my mr2 board after 4 years of ownership)
