Ok, ill try and make tihs quick. I was putting new speakers in my front door of my 08 runner so far i only got the front driver speaker in but in the process of doing this i ended up breaking part of the door lock system. The door lock has 2 wires connected to it one is white the other is green. I managed to break the white plastic portion of the wire so my lock isnt working to well. I didnt get to follow the wire down into the door because its really dark out now but my question is i am going to go the dealer tomorrow and i know its not going to be covered by warranty. Has anyone fixed this before? Is this something i can do or should i pay them? I cant imagine it being really hard its a metal wire that has to connect to some kind of pump in the door somewhere for the electric door lock to tell it to trigger..... Any ideas?

750 bucks later the dealership fixed my door. The next day i couldnt open it at all or unlock the driver side door. They said i broke the locking assembly i dont believe them i think i just broke the wire rod and the door handle itself but since they couldnt chanrge me for a new inside door panel (because they removed it without breaking it) they needed to charge me for something. The assmebly cost 250 bucks.

As you have found out small items on the 4Runner can cost a lot of money to get fixed once they are broken.
Some jobs are really best left to the people who really know how to do them.;):

Yes but i am going to do my last speaker install for the front passanger door. I did the 2 rear and besides the front driver mess up i know what i did wrong. I have put speakers in my 87 accord, my 97 CRV and 02 accord so i have done this work before. I just think its funny how because they didnt end up breaking my door panel (which was a 350) part they told me i need a locking mechanism when i know that worked fine before i brought it in just the door handle itself and the 2 rods needed to be replaced. O well. I called the lexus dealership across the street they said they could service my suv just not for warranty.

I don't get what you're saying about breaking the door panel? Why would they intentionally break that?

The locking mechanism is a fairly delicate and imprecise part, I could entirely see that being broken when the door panel gets pulled off.

I think you're under the impression that a dealership is always out to get you and will break things so you have to buy a new part. If that's how a dealership ran it would quickly leak and people would not go to them. They are not out to get you.

Ok when i brought my car to them i could not open the door. The door was permently locked. You could not insert key and unlock it you could not open it from the inside what so ever. They told me that they needed my permission to possibly break off the door panel because the door was closed shut so they could see what damage was done inside. I told them go ahead and do it and they told me if the panel did have to be broken i was looking at 550 bucks or so just to get a new door panel and put it on not including what other problems might have been inside the door. They called me and told me good news and bad news. They got the panel off so i didnt need to buy it but the mechnasim that locked and unlocked the door was broken. The reason why i say i didnt think i needed that was because the night before when i actually broke the white plastic holder that the hanger looking piece was connected to it was working. When you hit the door lock button you saw the wire move like it should it just had nothingt o hold it in place to actually unlock the door. My dumbass used superglue to try and fix the plastic which inturn ended up breaking i think the door handle when i pushed the orange lock with my finger. I am picking up my car in about an hour and i had called them 2 hours ago and asked if i could have all my old parts they told me they dont have them.....

Sounds a little suspicious. Were they consumed in a fire or something? They probably just don't want you to know that they did something simple to fix it and want to charge you as much as possible.

Sounds to me that if they did break the door panel you would of been looking at $1200 for your fix.

Just because they didn't break the door doesn't mean you didn't have internal damage resulting in a costly fix.

Or the mechanic thew them in the dumpster because it wasn't on the original work order to save the parts.

I don't think you will ever really find out what they really did. You took it there because you could not open the door. You told them to do what ever was needed. They did it and charged you. You paid and it's now a mute issue. Better luck doing the other speakers in your 4Runner.;):

Exactly. My dad is a mechanic and he throws everything away because maybe once a year someone will request the broken parts. At that rate, why bother collecting old, dirty, broken parts.
