Sound behind dash when driving??

01 runner, only hear it when driving and car is running.. sounds kinda like the power antenna going up or like when you use the washer fluid. Seems to cycle on and off,not constant. No CEL , just annoying, but it’s messing with my OCD.. [emoji12]

I drove my runner after few days and notice a sound right behind the dash. Pop the hood open and found one of the plastic tabs holding the cowl at the wiper arms has come loose and rubbing against the hood.

New t4r owner here...2002 SR5 Sport...

So my strange motorized sound behind the dash is just when I start the car. The power antenna is broken (from po) but it makes the sound even with the radio off.

The po did install VERY powerful HID headlights, but those making sounds would be strange..wouldn't it?

I've been in a friends suburban with load leveling and the sound is almost like that.

Any ideas?

The '01/'02 4Runners have an electronic brake booster/abs unit attached to the brake master cylinder, it could be that.

..and if you have an older model with ABS that pump cycles too. It should cycle once a few seconds after you start the truck (or turn the key to IGN.) It is located on the passenger side (on a 3rz at least).

Does it only happen with your A/C on? My 4runner makes a whiney noise for about 2-3 seconds, shuts off for about 10-15 seconds, and continues to run this cycle. Annoying as heck.

I did check that. It cycled on for a few seconds when I started it. It did not cycle again..I held my hand on it for a bit while my son sat in the car and told me when he heard the noise again.. so it is not that item making the noise I’m referring to. The A/C is off when this noise happens...well it happens if it’s on or off, so I’m guessing it’s not an AC issue making the sound.

Either of the two defrost settings will turn on the AC compressor, so there is that possibility, even if the AC is not turned on (the AC light doesn't turn on in that case either).

I can clearly hear when the AC compressor turns on, this is more like humming sound, like I said, kinda like the power antenna going up or a bilge pump turning on or a fuel pump priming..hard to explain but I’ll see if I can take a video of it..then I’ll have to figure out how to post it.[emoji849][emoji849][emoji12]
