if we need to go deep in this topic, the guy in the 5th gen lowcel do sound competitions, so his install might be a good guide.
That’s kind of how I looked at it. I did more than 25% coverage with the butyl layer, but nowhere near 100%. Probably in the 40-50% range overall. The butyl layer is already heavy, I know I’m already adding weight, I just didn’t feel like doubling the amount of weight I added. Between weight and cost, I didn’t feel the need for all that extra coverage with the butyl layer.
Now the foam layer is a different story. It’s lighter, and I should have got closer to 100% coverage with that.
I did just order the Noico 315 mil foam mat. I’m going to put that in my A pillars, and along the firewall that I can get to without tearing too much up. Then I’ll systematically go through and take door panels off and maybe get to the cargo area again and essentially add a 3rd layer and make sure I cover as much surface area as I possibly can.
Not sure what you’re referring to with the CCF. Right now I’ve done just the two layers.
It may well be overkill, and I get that the butyl lhas a different role so to speak, but I believe that the more layers between the sound and the ear, the better. I even read one site where someone who knows a lot more about it than me said that while it’s counterintuitive, the layer thing is not the case. In other words, more layers aren’t necessarily better. Maybe he’s right, I don’t know, but I do like how quiet my truck is.![]()
I was also worried about the airbags and so on but the A pillar turned out to be a piece of cake. There are two little covers on the handle that you pry off, and remove the screws underneath, take off the handle & then the panel just pops off. I’ve had it off several times to run wires and add the Noico with no issues.
I still have more to do on the interior firewall, but it’s not hard to remove the kick panels so I did them.
So I got my box of Noico 315 mat today and tackled those A pillars. You’re right, those are SUPER easy. Not sure how much of a noise difference there will be, I haven’t driven it yet. But for how easy that is, it’s a no brainer. I basically cut a bunch of rectangles and squares and stuck them to the backside of the trim piece and covered the whole thing. Took half a sheet of the mat per pillar piece.
Next is the kick panel area.
