Sounds when driving

My parents recently bought me a 1998 4runner Limited 4x4 for my 16th birthday. When i am driving the 4runner, i hear a whinning sound coming from what seems to be the back of the car. It makes 3 differnt sounds, one when acclerating, one when coasting at like 35, and it makes a very slight whine when you just barely press the gas. We changed the oil in the rear end, but that did not seem to help. I think that i will be needing some new tires in the next few months, so that could be the problem, but if anyone has any other suggestions for fixes, please tell me. Also, when we took off the back tires, the brakes seemed to have an oily residue on them, and that doesnt seem right. I would love your imput.

You may try a post over on YotaTech.com if you haven't already. I don't have any idea what your noise could be. However there seems to be a lot of 3rd Gen owners over at YotaTech who seem to have a lot of experience and knowledge. It may be due to a lot of those guys go wheelin and fix things them selves when something breaks. Good luck and enjoy your Runner.

I took it to my mechanic (they work on our Infiniti I30t, and our 4runners), and they looked it over, and they drove it and they could find nothing wrong with my 4runner. The head guy said that some rear ends just make noise, and there really isnt much that can be done about it. I guess that i doesnt really matter, because im not having a lack of performance from it or anything, and since htey said that it was all good i will just drive it untill something happens

you just have to remember sometimes that youre driving a truck.

itll make noises, be loud and grunt a lot.. but whats a 4runner without the grunt? :D

id bet it has nothing to do with your tires.. do you hear the whine when the radio is on, or is it when its off too?

i post a lot on yotatech.com, and as someone said, you might just wanna verify this issue over there... its such a terrific resource for 3rd gen owners.
