Help With Suspension Choices (Used products)

Hi all,

I recently picked up a 4runner and was playing around with the idea of replacing the XREAS with the popular bilstein shock/spring setup. With all this said I'm a noob but have combed many articles and topics about the swap.

I really didn't want to create a new thread about it but I wasn't able to find the information that I needed. I'm trying to do this on a budget so was curious if anyone could chime in as to whether this is A) Worth it and B) if it will even work.

First off between Craigslist and Offerup i've found a few what look to be great deals. I just need to know whether it's even compatible.

As far as struts and shocks go I have a few options.

A. Four Tundra 2007+ TRD Bilstein Shocks and Struts for $ 220
B. 2010 Tacoma rear Shocks (just two) non TRD with 30k miles on them for $50
C. Four 2012 FJ Cruiser Stock Shocks and Struts with 12k miles on them for $50.

COILS:
A. 2014 NON TRD Tacoma Front Coils Pair ("Low miles" whatever that means): $40
B. Old Man EMU 886x Tacoma Front Coils Pair 12k miles- $100
C. 4" Rough Country front springs: $75
D. Set of Ironman Rear Springs (intended for Landcruiser) for $100 Part # TOY013B


I know this is a total smorgasbord of products and I don't even know if they fit but I was hoping to get some opinions. Should I just scrap this whole idea altogether and get new ones? The reason for looking for used is that I will have to find someone to install these for me and will subsequently have to pay for that.

I think that none of the items listed will help you much if you are looking for Bilstein suspension.

A. Tundra shocks aren't compatible
B. Non TRD Tacoma shocks are not Bilstein
C. Might be your best option but stock FJ shocks are not Bilstein either. Springs are the same, to get Bilstein shocks you'll need to look for Trail Teams FJ setup which is in low supply these days.

TRD Tacoma suspension is a nice upgrade, rear shock bushings need to be replaced though. You can find some decent deals at TacomaWorld.

if you are trying to do it on the cheap. your best bet would probably be to source it through the t4r.org for sale section. and probably less headaches to deal with

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I should have been more clear. I'm not looking specifically for Bilstein, I just know it's popular. I'm honestly looking for an upgrade from what I currently have which I don't think would be too hard. Are any of the coils I posted worth pursuing?

I dont remember where it was, possibly Portland, but there was a Tacoma TRD Off Road set up for like $250 I think. I just picked a set up from a guy in Bellingham

Thanks Swanny for the suggestion! I found a guy in portland with the same thing. 2007 Tacoma TRD springs, shocks, and struts. These are a direct fit with just a bushing change correct?

Sorry to go off top but if anyone could chime in I'd greatly appreciate it... I recently purchased an 05 limited and I know for a fact that the Rear Air Suspension was changed within the last 3 months. A shop had put the truck on a lift and some how messed them up so they put them in for free before I bought it.

With all that said I feel that it's advantageous for me to somehow keep the RAS when I take off the XREAS and install the tacoma shocks and struts and coils. Can someone tell me if why I maybe should NOT do this? I would not be doing the work myself, my buddy's father owns a mechanic shop so I would probably inform him when doing the change to do raise the sensor or something (i'd have to reread ARK's post on the exact wording). Just want to make sure.

Also the guy has full set (coils, shocks, struts) 07 tacoma TRD prerunner, not sure on the mileage. Listed at $250. I'm going to try to see if he'll ship it to me for a $230 total.

How much should I expect to pay in installation? I'm going to ask for a quote and if it's off I'm not opposed to going to someone else.

Any Seattlelites have a mechanic they can recommend?
