Looking to run 285/70/17 Toyo AT3’s on my wife’s 2021 TRD Off-road. Just want to level and run this size tire on TRD 17x7 wheels. Will a 2/1 RC Spacer lift give me enough clearance?

Lifts don't give *wheel well* clearance, as the suspension will still articulate through the full range.

You might have to move the forward fender liner and push/ziptie/heat mold the rear mudguards of the front tires to minimize rub, but it should be readily doable.

255/80/17s would probably be easier to clear and less impactful to acceleration to keep the wife happy. Everything is a trade.

I think OP meant clearance to run larger tires not ground clearance. In which case yes lift will help you fit bigger tires.

Is a 2/1 enough? Sure, they will fit but it will most likely rub your front tires into your fenders and or body mount at full lock. See the fitment guide link below.

Just a note, Toyo recommends a minimum 7.5" wide wheel to run 285s per their charts. It definitely can and has been done on 7"s just throwing that info out there.

I think you have that backwards. Lifts do provide ground clearance (lift up the chassis which improves approach/breakover/departure/etc). Lifts do not provide clearance to run larger tires. Tires can still articulate (up and down etc.) through their full range of suspension motion, so unless you're lifting by 6" and then putting in a huge bump stop to prevent the suspension from articulating (which lifts don't generally do), then no they don't allow fitment of larger tires.

I've edited my comment to clarify that my definition of clearance was to the wheel well (what op is worried about rubbing) and not ground (not what op is worried about rubbing with upsized tires).

I'd stick with the stock size tires or 275s at the most. Many people have rubbing with the 285s.

I got the Rough Country 2/1 leveling kit and went with BFG KO2 tires in stock size and have never had any rubbing.

BTW, the Rough Country leveling kit, I ended up with more like 2 1/2" on the front.

Another thing to think about is any lift kit does NOT raise the rear axle. Thus, if you do serious off roading, you may want to get a good rear differential skid plate.

Afraid your mistaken there. Your statement about travel is true but not relevant to the argument. A lift on a 4Runner with IFS and a solid rear axel does not give you additional ground clearance. The rear diff remains the lowest hanging fruit...

While the rear axle is low, it is not the primary ground scraper on a stock 4runner. Go ahead and look under your 4runner and tell me what primarily drags (chin, tummy, hitch... not the axle).

How are you overriding physics of suspension range of motion with the lift that OP is discussing? It won't change the articulation / stuff clearances of the tire. If anyone is lifting for tire clearances on this IFS, then they are doing it wrong. Certainly they may adjust their IFS alignment to better position the wheel, but you don't need a lift to do that.

It’s not physics defying magic. It’s basic geometry. Good lifts kits change the geometry and articulation range. Even with a basic spacer lift the main focus is additional tire clearance at equilibrium not at full tuck. This is why we lift bro....

All I want to do is put a 2” puck above the strut to raise the fender height up to allow the fitment of a larger tire. I’m not pulling the strut apart to put a spacer inside to preload or limit travel. Certainly not my first rodeo, however this is my first time going this route. Geometry or not, physics, equilibrium and barium, I just want to run a little bit bigger tire so my wife’s 4runner looks almost as cool as my lifted Crewmax! Thanks for the entertainment.

Agree with El Dusty regarding lift improving tire clearance.

Something else to consider if you have rubbing in the rear of your front wheel well is having your caster adjusted. I had my stock UCAs maxed out prior to upgrading them and it resolved that issue with my old set up with the 285/70R17s.

With the 2/1 you probably want to stick with 275’s. I went with the 3/2 readylift kit and have been impressed. No creaking or popping, stock like ride, and the installer said the fit on the coil spacers was the best he’d seen from a lift. It’s not designed to increase offroad capability, but to maintain the soft stock ride which I happen to like for my mostly highway driving. 285’s will work on that kit with the stock wheel. I’m even running a wider wheel and had to do only very minor trimming on inner bumper plastic.
Whoever says the lift won’t help with tire clearance is incorrect. I can only imagine what they’re talking about is in extreme articulations that 99% of people will never encounter.

Damn they are skinny though.

255/80R17 isn't all that skinny. Mine isn't lifted yet, no trimming required.

One of the members here runs a 235/80R17, and says it performs great on and off road, and tows often with it. He used to run 285/75R17, and prefers the skinnies.
