computer chip key?
Do the keys for the 2000 4runner have a computer chip to start the engine?

They do. I just bought my key from an ebay auction and programmed it myself with the included instructions. Worked the first time. I had a local key shop cut it for me ($2).

Key was shipped fast and worked as advertised, I'd recommend the seller. The dealer wanted $79 for the key, PLUS programming charges!

No chip in my 2000 key
Well, I wonder what year and model Runner Jay has. Might be newer than 2000. I have a 2000 SR5 V6 4X4, and my key is solid metal, so I presume there could be no chip inside it. It's original too because it has the Toyota emblem on it. I do have a remote module which I don't carry much because it's too cumbersome. It locks/opens the doors and lowers the back window. The module probably requires programming if you get a new one, but I know for sure that my key just needs to be cut. I had a copy made at regular locksmith place and it works perfectly in ignition and doors. I carry the copy in a little pouch in my pocket for those inevitable times when I manage to lock my keys inside.
I agree with the poster who suggested telephoning Service at a Toyota dealership if you still have doubts. They will answer the question for you in a few seconds.

It does vary. I have a 2000 as well and mine has the security chip. If you call the dealer, they may not be able to give you a straight answer, since it depends on the options that came with the vehicle.

Assuming you have a service writer who is willing to give you a few seconds (don't call early morning), all you need to do is give him/her the VIN, and when they enter it into their computer, they will know in a few seconds exactly what kind of key you have, including its copy code etc., which is used (for a price) to cut a key when all keys have been lost. If it turns out that you have a security chip, you'll probably want to try the ebay approach when you hear how much a new key from the dealer costs ($70 for a Camry we had once). Good luck.

I got the spare for my '02 from eBay also. You have to following the directions exactly. I had to do a couple times before I got it right. It still took less than 10 minutes. Lowe's told me about the chip in mine.

oops, mine is a 1999 Limited 4x4, I should have put that in there.
It was not hard at all, and took a couple of minutes. You can fine the instructions on how to do in this thread.

Do you have to use the master key to program it or can you use the valet key? I only have the valet key.

You have to have a master key. I found a place on the internet that says they can clone a valet key, but I am not really sure what that will get you. They say they can also reprogram your ecm, but you have to send it in.

I guess I'm screwed then. It looks like I have to fork over the cash to the dealer for a new master key and have them program it.

I'm sure you can buy the key from ebay, then take the key to the to get the program aspect done. Not sure how much they would charge for just the programing.. just another option.
