all right here is why that front mount tire carrier will also fail.. The grill that they stencilled out is made of steel cast kind of like its door handles in real life. That grill drawing is also of a 1970's to early 80's style gm truck.. It would work fine on a full sized truck or van. If you noticed it says nothing about SUV's because they did not exist when that was designed... Your grill on your T4R is made of plastic and weighs about 3 lbs maybe 5 you would have to cut a hole in your grill and also your bumper to mount to the frame and core support. But you can not starve your truck of air flow it will overheat...

I've had you on my Ignored List for a while now. Unfortunately, this forum still shows that you've posted . Curiosity got the best of me and I opened them. Everything you're assuming about my plans is wrong. I've considered all you have to say and you need to understand that I'm not nailing a bunch of 2x4's to the truck. I'm not mounting anything to the grill without first prepaing it with some alternative engineering, and etc.

lmfao. thats hilarious. my mom is going to give my her ford explorer when she gets a new truck for me to trash, and im going to take a grinder and a few cutoff wheels, and going to cut off the back and weld on, in addition to a roll cage, and swiveling potatoe gun mount. stupid cows think they can come on my land and eat my grass and break my fences. bah. dont think they will be coming around too much longer. but some before and after pics are going to be sweet. keep up the good work man....

As far as the tire thing goes I would cut that Birch off asap(spelled it wrong on purpose). It would suck if you got a flat and couldn't get the spare out and had to call AAA for a flat tire... How embarassing would that be. Just keep it in the back they made runners 5 seaters so we could have a trunk full of trash and what not. When I fold down the tail gate it's only on Sundays to take out the trash. Besides you could put that money and time into something way cooler. Like some engine parts.

not sure if it's legal there or not, but why not add some support ot the hood and have a mount fit htere like many land rovers have. alternatively you can rivet some 3mm diamondplate to the hood and then mount the wheel carier on that, it's more than strong enough to support a tyre.

i'm an ex-landrover owner and i've had 4 guys on my hood for prolonged times while hunting.

I HATE arguing with a passion. so im going to try to sort this out kinda and make a few points of my own. obex26 is a well respected member of this community, and i do respect his opinion. he does have a very good point with the air flow starvation, and out 22RE's are extremely prone to overheating and warping the heads, but im not advocating his side at all. 04 sc v8 has a extremely good point that it is your truck and you can do whatever you want to it. i do agree with him. maybe the mounting it to your grille but buy a new rad with a third core to it, so more cooling is persent. why not just go to an auto wreckers and pull off a spare tire holder from the stock location and keep it that way? but its your choice, rock on, do whatever your heart tells you man. its your truck. but for the sake of all of us, just consider how easy it is to warp heads, and the cost it is to fix that ailment. but rock on man. some photos?

If he's (OBEX) a respected member of the forum, then he should honor that respect by not describing others' ideas a "dumb". The minute I read childish drivel like that, I scratch the author off. His subsequent posts have pr oven that he has nothing constructive to add to the the thread. I have to stand my ground. I've had too many of my forums ruined by bullies and such to even pay attention to this kind of crap.

I am, however, dealing with some brain storming on this tire thing. Whatever I do, I have to like it, cuz it's gonna look like that for a while.

Land Rover ideas are what I'm after. I got a para-military vision for this truck. I'm not sure what the state would think of it.

That said, the semi-desert environments don't seem to affect the forward placement of the spare "over there" under military operating conditions. The tire is used to help protect the radiator. The other forums that I consult have said to install the lower temp 180 degree thermostat to be sure. I've been checking that out.

Also agree with the idea that I need to have it out NOW and in the back until I get something worked out. I've been lucky for six years now.

I also agree that you'd want to upgrade the cooling system if you went a front mount and I don't think it's the best solution.

I think with the 4runner's car type seating a hood mount would really bum you out visibility-wise, and you'd have to reinforce it regardless.

Have a look at the threaded holes in the roll bar and think about how you might rig up a simple mount that attaches quickly and firmly to the roll bar. Even if you use the rear seats you could extend and offset it towards the back.

If you wanted something on the outside, I've briefly considered modifying a XTerra / Pathfinder rear mount system. You'd want to brace the sheet metal on the inside obviously. I'd think about either straight up riveted sheet metal that extends into the top mount and bed reinforcements or some sort of cored (using wood as a core material probably) fiberglass bracing. But it would be easier to either fab up your own bumper mount or buy a pre-fabbed one in my opinion.

Things are looking up. The welder up the road a mile that I mentioned is not too proud to do a little side work. I showed him the pic of the rear swing carrier and he said no problem and not alot of money but he'd have to do mine in between his real contracts. No prob- I'm never in a huge hurry. It saves money when I organize the parts for him too and so close to home. Might as well get some tubes for the front made up while he's at it. Fishing pole holders up there....that is unless my surf rods are going to impede the air flow to the engine.

I got a flat the same day I posted this.... LOL I was all dressed up to go out with the girl and I'm on the side of the freeway in a button up and dockers changing a tire on my runner. I never dress up and the one time I do I get a flat. I'll never dress up again. BTW THANK GOD toyota gives us a full size spare. I was laughing at some1 else that had a tiny spare on and was slowing the freeway down.

My 2 cents. I think you should try to find one of those spare tire holders that goes in your trailer hitch. It's a thought!
