What's the advantage of carrying the spare on top in the rack?

Really there's only one advantage - saving $$ by not buying a custom bumper with a swing-out tire carrier. Here's some disadvantages... the weight of the spare will noticeably increase your center of gravity and body roll, and you also need to be pretty tall and strong to get the spare off of there when you need it and to throw the flat tire back up there.

yeah, and unfortunately, once you go to 33's they dont really fit... or at least mine didnt fit underneath the car again,
luckily, I planned for this far in advance and have a roof rack on mine.
But yeah, the custom bumper with swing out tire is on my list, cuz like Ric and everyone else said, I dont necessarily like the change in the center of gravity, and if I do have to use it, its gonna be a pain in the neck to get down!
Edit: yeah, and Johns right, MPG prob went down, but Im so bad already, I dont notice anymore! :0)

For the same reason people put them in the bed of their trucks. Access to the tire is sooo much easier. But that depends on where you are located. A paved road in Kansas in April. Its not a big deal. A dirt road in April here in Maine, well that is something different. First, the flat doesn't normally happen at a great time. Then you are on a dirt road with VERY soft shoulders due to that fact that the frost isn't completely out of the ground yet. Then you go to lower the spare down, and F***, the F***ing thing is stuck in the F***ing up position. There is just enough corrosion that the wheel will not come down and the lowering cable is one big ball of rust. Oh yeah, its 34 degress, raining, and 10:00 at night.

MPG's will probably go down with it on the roof, a bonnet is a hood, i wanted to put the spare on the hood but this vehicle isnt designed for it.

Its pretty useful if its the only spare you have!
That said its best to put a tire of different size on the front. You may have to move around some tires if your flat happens to be on the rear, but you really don't want to travel very far on tires of different sizes on the same axle. The front axle is the bast place (if you have don't have a same size spare) to put it.

Yea i'd rather have some kinda spare than no spare; plus another rim and tire for a spare is expensive when your already spending over 1k for just the 4 wheels and tires haha

I took my spare to Performance Wheel and tire,
picked out a 285/75/16 and had them take my spare 265/70/16 as a trade in
No use in keeping it, and I didnt have to buy a new wheel, so to get a full size spare I paid 25$ out the door

So you traded your spare TIRE for $25? I might do the same that's pretty cool. I'm replacing my 16's with 17s do you that will be a problem if I keep the 16" spare and just match the correct tire size? I know that 17" wheels have different size 33's compared to 16" wheels
