Spare tire question....

What are the pro's and con's of removing the spare tire? I'm currently running BF Goodrich All Terrain KO's (mounted them a couple months ago), and my spare tire is a goodyear wrangler.

Pro's = None
Con's = When you get a flat you can't change it.

It doesn't really matter if your spare is different to the rest, just get any puncture repaired as soon as you can. My spare is a different tread and size but it will get me out of trouble easily.
 
True that. But what if your insurance offer free towing assistance? I just want to make the dummy pipe functional, but it's not gonna happen unless I remove the spare.
 
Do you take your 4Runner off road? Chances are, free tow or not, the wrecker's not going to come get you if your broke down in the woods. My spare has saved me more than once while off road.

If you don't want to mount your spare under the vehicle, why not mount it inside?

If you are happy to wait for an hour or more for some dude to come and change a tire for you then go for it. Or if you are disabled in some way or are not strong enough to do it yourself (a petite woman for example). Changing a tire takes me 5 mins easily so I could never justify paying for someone to do it for me, or go through the major hassle of being towed for a simple tire problem.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is a dummy pipe? Something for the exhaust?
 
I have dual exhaust coming out on each side of the trailer hitch. One is functional and the other is not.

How do you secure your spare in the back? I am looking for ideas since the 285's are too big for the spare location. They should hopefully be here in a few weeks (backordered).
 
I went so long being broke as hell and not having a spare tire because my cars were turds, I'll be d***ed if i take mine off
 
Right now I just have it upright, and bungeed to the hooks in the floor. So its not really mounted... i can post a pic later tonight if you want.

Upright as in it's standing up on it's tread, rather that on it's side? Doesn't it move around a lot, or fall over?
 
I think it is important to carry the same size spare as your other 4 tires since if you have a flat and need to use 4wd it's not a good idea to have one smaller tire.

I was fortunate that the owner prior to me had the bigger 265/75 already on so I just kept the best one of the Maxxis H/Ts tires I was replacing.

Yeah, up on its tread. I'll post a pic in about an hour or so. :biggrin2:

But it doesnt move or anything. the bungee is holding it down.

so its kinda leaning up against the side. But it doesnt move at all.

Interesting, it never occurred to me to put it right side up. I will have to test that out. I keep two bags in the bag all the time, so I am sure I can wedge it with them also. I always keep a tool bag, and a duffle bag full of recovery gear with me.
