Spare Tire relocation examples / Ideas !?

Hey Y'all,

So I was just wondering if anyone would post pics or info on any spare tire relocation that has been done on a 5th Gen. My spare has got to go... I was toying around with the idea of a rear bumper with a hinged tire mount / jerry can holder... I have also thought about dedicating some roof rack space, but that space is rather precious....


Any thoughts or experiences would be awesome. Thanks Y'all.

I'm fairly sure I've seen this on another member's rig; looks like a good solution without having to replace the full rear bumper:

Or just put it in your trunk/cargo space inside your car. Those are the 3 general places.

I went from a 4th gens to 5th gens and I purchased rear bumpers that had tire carriers without even checking to see what fits in the stock location. turns out 33s will fit in the stock location and I honestly wish I had not even wasted money on the tire carriers.

You can put it underneath (one place)
You can put it on the back (either swing out bumper or hitch mount)
You can put it on top
You can put it inside
You can put it on the front

That is all.

The jerry can mount there looks like a horrible idea -- any idiot rear-ends you on the street and very bad things will happen...

Rear bumper is a very common spot for gas jerrys. I rather have them on the rear bumper than on my roof.

I was just looking at your thread. Even with 255/80s (I have 5), your spare is exposed and sits below the bumper and trailer hitch. You'd still be vulnerable to tires scrapes during wheeling, so I'd say your bumper isn't a waste--unless you were considering roof mounting.

But if it's that much of a burden, I'll PM you my shipping address to help you sleep at night

Yes, I wonder about sidewall scrapes on the spare tire when off-roading. The sidewall sits below the bumper and trailer hitch but it's also closer to the axle so it's less likely to get scraped than the hitch. I was thinking about putting a thin skid plate over the spare. A flat 1/8" plate would be plenty, since it's backed up by the tire.

If you put the spare tire inside the cargo area you need to anchor it down so it can't move in an accident or roll-over. Otherwise it becomes a very heavy projectile inside the car. My 1995 Jeep spare is inside the cargo area but has a very firm anchor shaft with a nut that fits through a spindle anchor.

I modified a HitchGate to accept Rotopax gas containers to use with my truck camper. Sold the truck and camper and plan to use the HitchGate on the 4Runner.

Agreed, however its just 6 of one and half a dozen of the other kind of thing. with the carrier you get the extra overhang in the rear, but with the tire you get the hang down. But at least with it under the truck its not the lowest point of th eunderside.

4x4Labs, CBI, and I believe Hefty Fab is still making rear bumpers too.

My 4x4Labs rear with 3 Jerry Can holder.

I just did a fair bit of wheeling last weekend with the OEX training. I considered placing the tire on top but left it underneath to see how it did. It is a 265/70/17 BFGTA/KO2 so it sits lower than the stock. A few times my hitch scraped but the tire never did. I think because its closer to the axle as someone mentioned earlier.

Just mentioning in case you think its a deal breaker before hitting the trails.

I think the rear carrier is your best bet.

Chiming in on this old post, sorry I’m late to the party. I made this for my 4th gen because pulling an 70# tire off the roof rack sucks and having a projectile in the cargo area if you were to get into an accident is scary. I built it out of spare trailer hitches and mostly stuff laying around the house(could easily be sourced cheap if you live in a big city). I made it so I could still tow my trailer. Eventually I’ll build something more suited towards 4wheeling but it works for now and it was a fun weekend project. It sticks out approx 5” from the factory receiver and hasn’t scraped yet.
