Spare tire skid plate

My motivations are function over form. I want to keep the weight down as much as possible.

I'm going to see how things work out after the bumper mods. I'll try deflating the spare first.

Hoping to get access to a water-jet soon. That will open up a bunch of new possibilities for trying things out.

Not a bad idea. UMHW polyethylene is used for skid plates in many situations where there is good structure underneath to support it. I've had it on enduro bikes... I think it is pretty expensive in large size and thickness.

I was actually researching HDPE, or whatever it is that cutting boards are made of the other day. I think you could get a piece for about $100 and it would be light and rust free. Probably more expensive than steel or aluminum. And it would be white. I saw a place that had black pieces, but it was more expensive.

Find a commercial kitchen supply store. Big cutting boards would probably do the trick. Should be about $30 ish.

I drug my spare across a rock.. scuffed up the tire and scratched the bead on the steel rim, which is now rusting... I like the idea of removing the spare temporarily but i dont want to give up the cargo space.. and swing out and roof top are good options too but i want to try the skid plate..

I am thinking about making a .125 steel plate to cover the rubber.. and weld a flange to,it so the stock tire hanger grabs the skid and tire together.. the flange can match the inside diameter of the rim.... help keep everything in place..

Worst case i hit on departure 1/8" sooner but the plate will protect from future tire gouges and rim contact...

I will try to get something cut this week...

I bought it and like it. Did the Williams Pass trail in Colorado before I bought this and scraped my tire which I had already aired down some. No damage but you never know what would happen the next time so this prompted me to buy it. I also bought 2 of these so when needed I can put it under the spare and slide it out easily from underneath. This oil spill mat from Wal-Mart fits almost exactly over the carpeted section of the sliding rear cargo deck so it can be used to protect the carpet when you want to haul something back there without damage like maybe firewood or something like that. So dual purpose.

Where did you end up getting that? I've been searching high and low and can't seem to find it. I scrape the crap out of my spare and looking for a way to avoid getting gashes in it.
