Spare Tire Skid?

Has anybody tried one of these:

I would love to put an awesome swing out carrier on the back, but they are all pricey and reducing ground clearance unless you do a full bumper replacement. Plus, I'm not going over 33s, and I have a very nearly full size spare that fits (I run 33.1" tires, my spare is 32.6) in the stock location.

This just seems like some cheap peace of mind.

I feel like I scrape my rear diff/ axle, but I dont believe I frequently mash my spare tire

You could probably build one for much cheaper than $195. Looks like it's just a sheet of UHMW and some bolts

Hmm good point. Looks like a 36x36" sheet of 1/4" UHMW is 100$.

It seems like all bling and no real world purpose in my opinion.

And it might attract the attention of law enforcement thinking you’ve got something illegal stashed in there … :wink2:

I guess if you are where there is a lot of salt on the road, may protect it a little from corrosion and the winch from rusting out

I’ve hit my receiver hitch a few times but never my spare tire when it was in the factory location. I don’t remember it hanging as low as what’s shown on that 5th gen. I agree with a previous poster about buying a piece to diy. Check with your local plastics shops. They may have remnants for Pennies on the dollar.

The red skid shown in the photo on the website looks more like 3/8" to 1/2" thick.

If that skid-plate lip was to catch on a stump/rock, it would do damage to your spare tire or holder.
No way would I use one.

If you do the sort of wheeling that MAY bet you hung up on the factory spare location you more than likely aren't running a tire that can be mounted in the spare location anyhow lol. All bling with minimal at best application for the real world.

I've managed to scrape the spare tires off-road on my 4runners a few times. Other than visible scrapes, no permanent spare tire damage was done. I've done much worse to the other tires. Not sure I'd spend the money on that.
