Spare Tire/Wheel Swap For TBU?

I know from reading here that the Tundra Brake Upgrade in some iterations can render the stock steel spare wheel unusable on the front. Does anyone know if one of the other stock regular service wheels (like the 16" alloy wheel pictured below) can be carried in place of the steel spare wheel or are there issues with the spare tire carrier assembly under the truck?

In addition to that wheel, the later model 2001-2002 "coke bottle" style wheel (I have them, see sig pic) works also with the Tundra brakes.

I believe it's the earlier 3rd gens with the split spoke wheels which will not clear the Tundra brakes.

Hi ToyotaBrah, what Tundra caliper size do you have on it? 231mm or 199?
I have 2002 Sport Ed with exactly the same wheels and was debating either put 199mm on them or just to keep them stock. Only because my wheels were not on the list in that infamous thread.

Swampy_swimmer, I have the 231mm calipers that have the "13WL" stamped on them. I elected to upgrade my brakes as soon as I bought my truck as the stock rotors were warped. I could have easily just thrown on a new set of rotors and pads and would have been fine. But, for $200 more, I not only fixed the brake issue but also upgraded them. Very happy with them and probably the best bang for buck mod I've done on the truck.

And I should mention, the 199mm calipers are still an upgrade over the stock 4Runner calipers. Having said that, I think the 4Runner brakes are fine and have plenty of force to stop the truck, it's just the thin rotors they come with that are inadequate.

Oh wow, thank you so much for that info and response. So just to sum it up: 2002 coke bottle 16" rims clear 231mm calipers? That is great to know.
