SPC Light Racing UCA

Alright, just found out from MetalTech that my ICON UCA's aren't in stock and it will be weeks before they can even ship them to me. That sucks since my Boss lift is sitting at FedEx waiting for me.

So, what is the consensus on the Light Racing UCA for street/highway and light off road use?

most people will tell you stay away. they have a history of changed bushing designs, ball joints that fail prematurely, and cracking/breaking at the welds. however, there are many people that have used them for thousands of miles, on and off road who have never had an issue. personally i wouldnt take a chance on them, especially with the other options that are miles ahead in build quality and strength for not much more money. i wouldnt pick the cheapest option, as they say "buy once, cry once"

Yah, my passenger side LR UCA ball joint needed replacing after a year and 8000miles. Not impressed! They did send me a new ball joint no charge but I had to pay $20 import fees and $80 for an alignment. Will be my last SPC product, I guess you get what you pay for.

I've had good luck with my SPC UCAs for the last couple of years. I've driven a range of terrain from down right rough and nasty to lots of highway miles.

However, I went with Camburgs for my 5th gen this time around.

I've got SPCs on my T4R and haven't had any issues after several thousand miles. From what I could tell, SPC had issues with an early batch or early design, but have since fixed it. That's what I gathered from some research as well as from a shop that runs them on "tons" of vehicles without issue.

For the price they're hard to beat, and I'm not planning to do any serious off-roading, so I went ahead and got the SPCs. Here's a pic comparing OEM to SPC. They aren't as beefy as other on the market, but they're more stout than the originals.

Of course, if they ever break I'll be posting about it!

try the camburg with ball joint press in. It should be similar priced. I would stay away from Light Racing. I sold mine i had on.

I just ordered the Camburg with the Moog ball joints and will be selling my Light Racing UCA's.

My SPC's have held up pretty well and I slam the 4Runner around enough to put a few good dents in my new RCI 3/16" steel skids.

The first set I had the bushings went out in a little over a year or two (this was the set I bought about 3 years ago) and SPC sent me an entire new set of UCAs, the current ones have held up fine and I haven't had any issues, they even have longer upper ball joint boots (the old ones did not and it concerned me in dusty/dirty environments.) That being said I have seen one set actually crack at the welds and just make a mess (part of it was the driving style/improper approach/over burdened suspension set-up on that vehicle/driver, the other part was a very probable welding defect when I looked at it.) Though I have seen a few more cases of failures from mild to severe off-roading, which in my opinion is a bit on the high side for a product intended for off-road use; but conversely SPC has been very good with their customer support and they seem to actively be fixing their product for what its worth.

One of my personal favorite things about the SPCs is how well they adjust in terms of correcting alignments, their upper balljoint set-up so far is a much better solution than most of the tubular designs.

All that being said, if you have an extra hundred or two and you really intend on slamming your 4Runner around; I'd go with some nice tubular set-ups. If you're mainly just looking to correct alignment after a lift and mainly do on-road driving I don't think the SPCs will hurt and they do a good job there. I personally will be going to a beefier UCA later down the road, but so far I haven't had an issue with my set and my typical off-roading mentality is: "the mountain will either stop me or crumble under my 4Runner, one way or another I'm going THERE!" :)

Post Note-

The SPCs have garnered a bad reputation (not undeservedly so) and it takes a while for companies to recover from bad reputations, even if their product is 100% flawless NOW (not saying that they are, just saying that even if they were the best on the market NOW, people would still be wary/uneasy); its a natural reaction from people. Its not bad or good that people still bash on them, even though it seems their quality has gotten better, its just one of those things that takes time to sort out and many people would rather err on the side of caution and history and I genuinely can't blame them for that. All I can do is play devil's advocate and say, "well my new SPCs haven't exploded and killed me yet and they do well with how abusive I am off-road so maybe they're getting their shit sorted out?"

The main reason I bought LR UCA's was because they were the only one with a conventional style enclosed ball joint. I just don't see a uniball joint surviving salty winters and while I'll enjoy working on my truck, I have no interest in washing/lubing the uniballs every week for 5 months of the year. I would be happier if they came with greaseable ball joints so I could give it a shot of fresh grease every now and then.

You may also want to look into a set of camburg uca's. The non uni-ball set utilizes OE spec ball joints but has more caster built in. There is no adjustment built in to them but you'll still be able to adjust your alignment with the LCA eccentrics. That way if the ball joints go bad, you can easily pick up a replacement part of the local auto parts store for $30 a piece. You wont get the extended travel of a uni-ball but you'll get the reliability of an OE ball joint.

I've always had bad luck in the past with lowered vehicles using SPC adjustable ball joints. They always seemed to fail prematurely.

The LR arms have been improved and I haven't seen any failures on any of the newer arms, However like others have said its hard to start trusting a company again. While I wont steer someone away from LR if they ask me for my advice I will tell them to buy the Icon tubular arms or the TC arms. So far I haven't had any complaints on either of those 2 arms and that includes noise complaints. Both allow for perfect alignments as well.

Did mine count as the newer style? Wasn't a failure per se but those ball joints should have lasted longer :(

This is a set from a friends Tacoma up in Colorado this past summer. His were the old 4 washer per arm design. We called up SPC at 5pm that day and they over nighted a brand new set to our camp for free, We had them on by noon. On my 04 I have the newest revision and did the same trails with no problem and still none over 5000 miles later. I'm keeping an eye on them just to be sure but so far nothing to complain about, and since he has received the newest revision he is the same way. Now I do plan to goto a uniball in the future just for the added travel but not because of any issues experienced but YMMV.

I just ordered the Camburg with the Moog ball joints

im looking at picking up a set of the camburg BJ arms, where did you find the best price on them? I will need just the arms, as i got a takeoff set of OEM UCAs from an FJ to harvest the OEM BJs.

back to the OP, i too would suggest the camburg BJ arms. sounds like you are in the same situation i am in and i think they are the best bang for the buck!
