Speaker Adapters

I'm putting 6.5" speakers all around, and I'm trying to find out where to get speaker adapters for the front. I know this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find the thread with the information I was looking for. I already found speaker adapters for the rear, but the fronts are a different size as well and I'm not sure which ones to get.

I bought these (link) adapters for the front and they work fine with my 6.5" components. All you have to do is remove the stock 6x9 speakers and keep the original plastic spacer. Then, screw the adapter onto that spacer where the stock speaker used to be. They weren't a perfect fit so I had to dremel out the screw holes a little, but it wasn't off by much. I also put some thin foam tape around the edges so it made a tight seal with the spacer.

Sounds good, I'd still like to keep my original speakers in good condition. I haven't torn anything apart yet, so I wasn't sure how that would work out.

You have to tear out/ruin your original speakers. They are molded into the factory adaptors. I drew a diagram of a 6x9 oval with a 6 ½” circle in the middle of the oval, using MS Word. I printed this out and rubber cemented it onto a piece of fiberboard, for a cutting template. It takes time to do it right. I had to reprint it a couple of times using the enlarge/reduce printer function, in order to match it exactly to the factory adaptor.

The front 6x9 speakers in my JBL system weren't molded to the factory adapter. They were, however, glued to the adapter with some sticky black tape. All you have to do is unscrew the 4 screws attaching the speaker to the adapter and then pull really hard along the edges of the speaker to free it from the adapter. The speakers can still be re-used.

Very. Perhaps JBL just provided the speakers and Toyota just had a special adapter for them, instead of making custom molded speakers which they could do at the factory.

Good to know, either way.
