Speaker Question

Ok, in my 3rd gen...I really really want to upgrade my factory speakers. I have already upgraded my headunit and realized what crap the factory speakers are.

SO.....should I

A) Keep the factory tweeters in place and upgrade the front and rear speakers with speakers that also have tweeters (3 way speaker)

B) upgrade the fronts (including tweeters) to component set and the rears to a speaker with a tweeter (3 way speaker)

C) Upgrade front to component set and the rear to a speaker w/o a tweeter


Also, if I upgrade the front tweeters, I might try to utilize the factory tweeter elsehwere. Anyone had experience doing this?

If you are going to upgrade, don't reuse your old speakers. Yes, get a component set for the fronts that come with a tweeters as you will get more detail with better tweeters.

FOr the rears, most audio enthusiast don't put too much stock in the rears as they seem to mostly be "filler" sound. That said, maybe try upgrading the fronts to components first and see how your car sounds before spending the extra to upgrad the rears.

I've got a pair of JL audio C5 650x 6 1/2 component set that I bought 3 months ago that I replaced again because I liked the tonal sound of a different speaker. I would be willing to sell them to you if you if you're interested. They are well regarded high-end speakers that I'll sell cheap since they will just collect dust now anyway. They are $499 but I'll sell them for $200 shipped.

Any respectable audiophile would have to say that the stock set-up on the 4R's with the tweeter so close to the listener and so far away from the midbass sucks...

Having said that, I did replace my mids up front with a 3 way component set of JL-Audio's in my last rig and was very happy with it, and in the rear I just used coax 6.5's with a lot less power to them (for fill)...was a very nice set up and sounded fantastic.

I replaced the tweeters but moved the location down with the mids...I fit my tweeter, a 6 1/2 inch midbass and a 4 inch mid all in the lower speaker location...was tricky but sounded AWESOME!

I am stock now and am really hating it...even the wife says she misses the old stereo...

Wow, you must of had to cut into the door a little bit to fit the 4" mid to fit, right? How is your sound stage? I use to have the 6 1/2 and the tweet installed down by the mid speaker port but felt the sound stage was too low and a little faux as far as feeling like the sound is in front at ear level. With your setup having 4" mids for highs, I'm curious if you feel the same.

Sorry no pics...was my old rig so can't take any pics for ya. I felt like having the soundstage a little lower was much better than having the tweeter "tinging" in your ear.

There is quite a lot of room in that door, what I did was place the speakers as far apart as possible in the existing opening, built a small board out of MDF to bring the speakers out away from the window a little and I did have to trim some plastic from the inside of the door panel. Worked out great and the speakers absolutely screamed.

I've always loved loud mids...had one system back in the day that had 4 sets of components!
