anyone know if theres a write up on how to install new speakers and tweeters in place of the stock ones w/o an amplifier?

Heres my 2 cents... by working at a shop I've learned a few things...
If you have problems working on a toyota, then you probably don't need to.
Seriously, toyotas are some of the easiest vehicles to work on, esp the 3rd gen 4runners. You don't need an amp ever. While it will make the speakers sound better, you don't have to have one.
Just take a look at your door panel and figure out how to take it off... I swear its nothing more than a few screws and it pops off. If you really need pictures I suppose I can do that.

Alright here ya go...tools you'll need to complete this door panel removal.
A phillips head screw driver!
Take the tip of your drill, screwdriver, w/e and push in the middle of this tab. Then you can pull the whole thing out with ease. 1 of these is up at the front of the panel and the other is on the back edge.
Next take out the screw behind the door handle itself. Then you'll need to pop out the entire handle. Just push forward towards the front of the car and you'll feel it pop out. Easy enough.
Step 3 requires you to pop out the window controls. Do this by pulling up on the front of the controls. Unplug it.
Now you'll want to pull up the arm rest. Just grab it and pull up.
Remove the 2 screws that the arm rest was hiding.
Now you're ready to remove the panel. Do this by grabbing the bottom corner towards the front of the car and pull out. These are just pop clips. Be careful though because you can break the panel. You'll have to lift up to get the panel over the door lock. And you'll want to sort of twist the handle with the plastic peice on it and feed it through the back of the panel. Thats it.

oh yea, and your speaker colors...
driver front +/-... pink / violet
passenger front +/-... light green / blue
And i would assume for tweeter colors +/- will be red/black ? Doesn't quite matter honestly.

I, too, am wondering how to do all this.
I removed the door panel and everything, but right now I need to figure out how the heck to get the speakers out to put the new ones in? Am I just missing something? I dont see how to remove the 5 1/4 speaker from that big plastic bracket???

It's obvious about taking the screws out, I've removed every screw on that plastic piece with the speaker in it and it seems like it is glued in there or something, or maybe its just me being scared of snapping something in half. Either one is a possibility.tarheeltp17 said:

I work at a shop here in NC, but I can't remember exactly how to do it. I just got my 4runner about 3 weeks ago so I haven't replaced the speakers just yet.
Normally if there is something tricky about a car, I'll remember how its done but if its something simple its just one of those things you just do. It probably is just sort of glued into the plastic piece. I'm off thursday so I may just pull off my rear panel and see if its anything tricky. But honestly, seeing as how its toyota, it's probably not.

I assumed the rears because you said 5 1/4" speakers... the fronts at 6.5. And there is nothing tricky about removing those. Just pry on the speaker a little bit after removing the 4 screws. It'll come loose I promise.

Just read the EDU my truck does'nt have power windows...how do i get the window crank off?

there is a little clip behind the crank that holds the handle on. Be careful because if you lose that clip your handle will not stay on, and they can fly off pretty easily when trying to remove them.
