Special plug wires?

I am going to R&R my plugs tomorrow on my 2000 T4R.

I am going to put NGK plugs in 'er (BKR5EKB-11)...wondering if there are any especially good plug wires you'd recommend?

I had asked a while back about ideas around chugging cold start, etc. but got no answer...so off I go with some of the basics.

I'll clean the MAF sensor and any other tings I can think of...but for now just wondering about the wires.

Personally I would stick to OEM plug wires. But make sure the spark plugs are dual firing. Have fun and enjoy that smooooooth 3.4. mhmmm
 
x2 on OEM wires...

If you hold out on the wires a few days you can order them online for about the same or a little less then a decent set at Napa.

What parts source do you recommend online?

I think I'll do the deckplate mod today and do the plugs and wires later this week (when it's like 10 degrees outside, I imagine...will freeze my a** of in the garage).

I dunno if you'd be able to find any, but I use TRD spark plug wires. They have low resistance cores which delivers a more powerful spark than standard plug wires, and I actually noticed a bit of improvement in idle quality and low range power after replacing the OEM ones with TRD ones

Strange design. I guess it goes along with the Denso on one bank and NGK on the other? :wink2:

I guess each coil (3 on top of the passenger bank plugs) handles two plugs. Then spark plug wiring over to the other bank. Still have to wonder if that setup is better (or more efficient) than putting a coil on each plug. Maybe that is what Toyota decided because the 4.0 is that way.

OEM parts resources here....I'd recommend a specific one probably if I knew where you were located.

I have no idea how you can have 3 wires and 6 spark plugs????

Three coil-over-plug packs on the passenger side plugs. Three wires from each pack to the corresponding plug on driver's side. ECU calls for spark at each coil as either side requires spark at top of compression/start of power stroke. The other side also sparks at exhaust/intake stroke. This is the "waste-spark" in waste-spark ignition.

Some theorize the NGK/Denso thing is because the heads were built in different factories with different suppliers. Others have said one brand is technically better for the polarity of the driver side vs. passenger. I have no clue on this part. If I have to, I'd go with different factories/different suppliers.

From the spark plug install write-up, you also said "Nice writeup, but do you guys really not know how to change a sparkplug?"

I don't mean to be an a#$, but the spark plug write-up was good and demonstrated that these engines have the coil packs on 3 plugs, and the wires run over to the other 3 plugs. The coils fires two sets of plugs for each coil. Page 10 explains how these work. http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h23.pdf.

There would still need to be 6 wires, whether they be rerouted through the coil pack or not, its a confusing way to do it.
