Speed Sensor

How much and how hard is it to replace the speed sensor on a 99 4runner 4x4? My cousin is looking at buying one but they say it has a bad speed sensor. I did some research and cant find anything on it. Anybody have an opinion or deal with this before?

It is easy as pie. Just unbolt, unplug and replace.

actually, it’s not ‘easy as pie.’ Front can be easy, but rear wheel speed sensors can be a nightmare.

Sure, it’s fairly easy to get the actual sensor itself dislodged from the wheel hub with enough, gentle tugging and prying, but getting to the electrical connection at the other end of that line is nothing short of a nightmare, as it lives up top of the frame, in the small space between there and the truck bed, where the rear struts connect at top.

Good luck to you in accessing. One tip: remove that straight stabilizer bar that goes across the rear axle area and it’ll make room for your arm to get up in the areas that I’m talking about.

Just to clear up the other replies cause they are both right.

if you have ABS. You have a speed sensor on each wheel, and the ABS computer is what averages them and feeds the speedometer.

If you do not have ABS, then its one bolt on your transfer case to remove the VSS.
