Speed Trap State: Ohio

Just consider yourself warned before your summer trip, Ohio is infamous with their speeding tickets.

Couple tactics:

In Ohio, there are many rural expressways / US roads such US 30/ US 224 that are not part of the interstate highways such I70 and I90. They are divided, separated, 2 line both sides passing near by but not through many small cities and towns. Speed limit changes very quickly, it can be 70/65/60/50 within a mile with or without construction zones.

Cops of these small towns earn significant amount their revenue through these expressways by placing themselves in the location where the speed limit arbitrarily drops very quickly.

They target primarily out of state, good vehicles with small fines like 100-125 bucks. Fees are small enough many drivers don't fight back, and it makes little sense to appear to the court since you are out of state.

You may say this happens everywhere, but Ohio is a bit over the limit. In many other states, you don't depend as much in expressways, interstate major highways with predictable speed limits is sufficient enough to cross most of the states. In Ohio, it is not. And Ohio needs your money badly.

Their radars may add 2 to 3 mph to your speed. This is what happened to me, driving 73 (cruise control, original tires) on a zone assuming it is 70 since it has been for the last 10 miles, caught in radar for 75 on a 65 zone. Officer was hiding on the curve to catch out of state fish. I asked the officer where was the sign that tells it dropped 65 mph, he didnt know. He said it is all along the way, it is 65 mph. Yet a mile later I see again 70 mph sign ...

Toledo is particularly bad:

There are lawsuits finding small cities cross the line with speed cameras:

just get a good radar detector, i've never been surprised by a speed trap. you can also run laser shifters/jammers in ohio, you'll ideally want 4 front and rear heads to be the most effective.

i only don't like VA because the penalty for radar detector and laser jammers is too high to mess with.

The best radar detectors start about $300 now, but you can probably find an old passport 8500 (which was probably the best single direction detector) for <$100

I drive pretty slow now so my laser jammers are sitting in a box, but when i had them installed i defeated plenty of lidar hits and with my radar detector i get more than enough notice for radar
