I was looking at this thread on a problem a member is having when he turns his engine off and a thought occurred to me.
One of the biggest complaints about Nav units is the lengthy start-up time. It seems like you might be able to rewire or tap into the circuit that detects that the key is inserted and have the stereo turn on then (basically wire it so that your stereo is on as long as the key is inserted not just when the key is in ACC or On).
The other modification would be to put a large capacitor in the circuit to even out the voltage dip and prevent the unit from rebooting when you turn the ignition to start.
So if it all went perfectly, as soon as you inserted your key, the HU would start booting and shave several seconds off the boot time (or if you have kids getting into the car eliminate entirely).
Anybody have any thoughts on this. I haven't looked at a wiring diagram yet but may try to implement this. The biggest problem I can envision is can you get a capacitor big enough (for a reasonable price) that has the ability to provide the required voltage through the length of startup sequence.
Those of you with Navs (such as the Kenwood DNX-6160 that seems to be so popular) is the start up delay really a problem?
