Speed!

the best mpgs you'll get will be around 65-70

Just a friendly bit of info... Last year I was in Yellowstone for an entire day doing between 40-50mph. I would have liked to go faster, but the mother in law kept yapping for me to slow down, so that's the speed we went. I was a bit surprised that I pulled 26mpg at this speed. I think our "sweet spot" is much slower than 65-70, but then again, who wants to drive 40mph everywhere? Certainly not me.

is the factory roof rack still installed? If you don't use it I'd pull it off. Should save a couple mpgs.

Would this make a noticeable mpg improvement for someone going 65-70mph on the highway? Or are we talking 110 here...

If I can get a few mpg, it's coming off.

You won't see much of a difference at normal speeds 50-70. Chance are you would barely see a difference at 110 either. It's just another thing that is creating drag but the truck itself has almost entirely flat front end so it's like sailing a sail boat and taking off your hat for better wind resistance.

Oh yes you will.

Wind resistance is the square of the speed.

At 60mph - wind resistance is 3600.

At 110 - wind resistance is 12100.

That's more then tripling wind resistance.

The best method I have found for increasing MPG/efficiency occurred once I installed my ScanGaugeII. I have the Load as one gauge, MPG Instant as one, Speed (for the larger tires), and average MPG....I use the Load gauge more then the others aside from the corrected MPH and can really attain the better MPG I am after. I accelerate like a grandpa and slow down well ahead of the stop sign or light and have employed the "hypermile" attempt to driving...I have plenty of go when I need it with the V8 and can still get close to the same MPG as the V6 when driving like a badass scared grandpa...

I noted an improvement in mixed driving 70 mph and under. If you don't use it I'd Def pull it. quickest way to gain some mpg. yes it will make a bigger difference at higher speeds but a lower drag coefficient is always better.

Yeah, you said that, but he's talking about gaining mpg by removing the roof rack. I'm not saying that it won't reduce drag by removing it but something as low and streamline as a stock roof rack is not going to affect your mpg by that much when the truck itself is basically a wall. Especially at speeds of 50-70 mph. Aside from the cross bars and front of the parallel bars the stock roof rack has no forward facing faring that could affect air flow that drastically.

impressive MPG, but like you said, i could never drive 40mph everywhere.
