Speeding Ticket Advice?

hey guys, i saw "speeding ticket" in this subject and wanted to ask the forum for some advice for anyone who has gone to the courthouse on the day requested on the ticket. Is it beneficial to show up and pay it there (since i heard that the judge sometimes lowers the fines) or to just pay the ticket in the mail?

if you go there, i know in ga you can plead nolow which will keep it off your record and bring the price way down. Its like a get out of jail free card

If you are going to contest the ticket, then call the court, request for a reschedule and choose a time where cops are usually busy like 11AM or 2PM, your big chance if the cop won't show up. Be polite..

Even if I have slim chances I will still go there or call to postpone if I'm not available, in that way I will know my score., I will bargain for ways just not to deduct points from my driving records, chances that I may be illigible for a traffic school and erase those negative points. Its not just paying the fine, its about your insurance going up and etc..

I received that photo from a red light cam(Florin/Franklin) so I called the court and found out that there was a cancellation since the reviewer admitted the error and instead award the best actress to the old lady who was following me and she triggered the cam

So, just call,be polite and ask for all possibilities that benefits you.

Most tickets offer a reduction in points if you pay in the mail but if you challenge it and lose (or the cop shows up) you pay the full penalty.

I have been twice in this situation, and both times, the DA called all the first timers aside and said "if you plead nolo, the state will award no points and you will be on probation for 6 months". So basically, I just had to pay the fine and as long as I got no other ticket in 6 months, it would not show on my insurance.

Did this once in IL and once in VA.

Daughter got tagged for reckless in VA (81 in a 65) and had to go to court. Low cut blouse, short skirt, and the judge reduce it to simple speeding and cut the fine way down.

If you can go to court, and are not a habitual offender, I think it may benefit you.

I have gotten several speeding tickets (stupid sports cars) and have gone to the courthouse on my date. EACH TIME I have gotten off by only paying court-costs. No record of the ticket, and no record on my insurance.

I suggest going to the courthouse, if for nothing else, the entertainment of it all. They usually bring in the ones with the bracelets and colorful clothes at the beginning. That by itself is great entertainment.

Then you usually get to hear some dumb butt argue with the judge over a moving violation. This too is humorous. Then you get the feel of things, realize you were in the wrong and that the judge is only doing his/her job, and you just be polite and professional (always in coat in tie) and just take whatever they dole out. Again, I have a perfect record b doing this.

It's short for nolo contendere. It basically means you're accepting the punishment for the violation you're accused of without actually admitting to the violation. In a legal sense, this means that you can not have "plead guilty to speeding" used against you in another case sometime down the road.

I think a common example would be speeding and hitting someone. If you plead nolo on the speeding, they can't use your confession against you in the civil suit that might arise from having hit the person.

Last time i had a ticket in Sac, the judge lowered the fine from $230 to $160 for going 90mph on 65 (I-99 freeway), then offered me to go to Driving School in lieu of having points on my CA DL. But that was 12 yrs ago.

What ALLEGRO said is pretty much the norm (at least around here). Dress nicely, don't be an ass and the judge will probably recognize that you are human after all.

Plead "no contest", meaning you're not challenging the ticket and (I think) you're not admitting to being guilty either. If it's your first offense or one in 'x' number of years, mention it to the judge and ask for traffic school (if you haven't had a moving violation in the last 18 months). They usually reduce the fine by 25-50%.

The letter from the court for the fine (if I wasn't going to do anything and just pay it) was higher than the total I paid after the reduction, administrative and traffic school fees.

My friend who appeared in of another judge said the judge offered a 50% reduction in fines for everyone with a moving violation that day and traffic school if they're eligible in an effort to move cases in and out of the system quickly. If you choose to challenge your cititation, it will be noted in your case/docket that an offer was made and no reduction in fine or traffic school (not sure if they can take away the traffic school option from you) if you lose your case.

Also, be aware some officers will automatically submit a written declaration of the violation in the event if you read some tips about beating tickets via written declaration. Rumor has it that 1/3 of officers don't respond to written declaration which means an automatic win for you. Another friend of mine tried that, it was a no go. (The officer that cited him, probably is the other 2/3s).

I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in this state so I don't know how it works.

Last ticket I had I plead "Guilty with an explanation", and simply told the judge I have a clean driving record and I would like to keep it that way.

Judge had me pay fine and court costs with 6 months PBJ which I was absolutely fine with. No points on license and more important nothing to the insurance co.
