Speedo Calibration??

Simple and free solution is to follow a buddy at predetermined speeds and look at what your speedo says. Cheap 2-way radios help a lot for this method. Have him drive a steady 25, follow and note reading on your speedo, then go to a 35 zone, repeat, all the way up to highway speeds.
Doesn't FIX the problem, but it will help you avoid getting an unnecessary ticket.

Well I have already figured out that when I'm going 60, I'm actually going between 70 and 71 (his speedo said 72). I was following a Honda civic That had a digital speedo and was able to see this for about 5 miles of steady driving.
It's just for what doctors call laziness of my brain that I wanted to correct it hahaha.
Hmmm, interesting, but I am a little hesitant to think that this would work on a 95 4runner. Even tho the speedo is electronically controlled I do not think it is controlled by the computer in the vehicle in the manner that the ones in newer cars are... Guess I'll just have to compensate in my head for now.

Re-gear it correctly and it will fix it.
Also, you can get the correct tooth drive gear for the Tcase. Even the electronic ones have different teeth to swap in them. In those years you could get 4.10s, 4.30s, 4.56s, and 4.88s from the factory. You just need the correct gear for the Tcase.

hmm, that's an idea for sure..... I'm not sure what gears I have, I haven't checked the axle code yet, but I definetly would not go any higher than I have at the moment haha. I will def keep this in mind tho. Oh yeah I am kinda challenged at this stuff, would I need to gear up or down to fix the speedo??

Taller tires means lower gears. Your stock ratio is most likely 4.10, so 4.88 would be a good match for 33" tires. Not only would it correct your speedo error, but more importantly you would regain the lost MPG and power.
But regearing the diffs would run you $800-1200.
Changing the gear on the speedo sender would help with the speedo, but do nothing for performance.

hmm, now that would be the best option for me at the moment, the MPG isn't all that bad i get like 15 and 16 on a good day. I'm gonna be on Google tonight lookin for a gear for the sender. As for the 4.88's once I pay off my Ranger I think I really might look into that. Then it would give me an excuse to put an E-locker in :guitar2: oh
fftopic: but I think my Front diff has either an aftermarket LSD or locker in it, because when I was messing around with it both the front wheels had power to them, idk if that's normal in a front axle or not, as I am new to the whole 4x4 scene. Thanks all for the awesome info. I really want the 4.88's baaaaad, but don't have the monies right now :cry2:

Help i got a 1999 4.3 SR5 LTD that is getting e SAS and a Geardrive T-case
and is losing the Airbags and Antilock brakes.I have been told the speedo will
not work without the antilock STM? The stock T-case has a plug where the
cable would go but there is no speedo cable on this 99 4Runner???Any HELP

this isnt so true. i have factory 4.88's from a '95 matched with 33'' tires. my speedo reads about 7 mph slower than what im actually going. (ask the cop how i know) the 4.88's put you back to the stock power band but the speedo isnt correct. mine isnt atleast. when i put a set of 35's on (for giggles) my speedo only read 2 mph faster than what i was going. i have a rebuilt W56 tranny with stock gear ratios in it. sooo...... gearing in the dif's wont always put your speedo back to normal.

you would need one of these for start
Vehicle Speed Sensor, MCI | Marlin Crawler, Inc.
but if i remember correctly the speedo uses the average speed of each abs signal to put out the speed on the speedo and not taken from the t case like on older vehicles with cables

I put a new speed sensor on my '94 as the speedo was doubling speed. That
new part did not correct the problem. I noticed this three years ago when she
first let me drive it and she said "it always done that". The trany rear has a
plate with about 8 bolts and incorporates the SS. It spilled just a little fuid when I changed the SS, so I'm guessing the plate will lose a lot if unbolted.
Is that where the gear I must change is? If I change one do we change the other?
