Speedo/Tacoma vss issues

I’ll keep it short. While back. Front wheel bearings were done. Right after that my speedo died. Only front ABS sensors were wired in. And my speedo worked just like that. So replaced with used oem from sensors. Nothing. Wired back in the rear abs sensors. NOTHING! Installed Tacoma VSS the speedo works. However. Let’s say I come to a full stop. Then drive again it STOPS working. Wtf! So I though maybe it’s a cheap sensor so that’s why. Ordered a oem used vss. Still the same. The speedo works. Come to a full stop. Go again and 0. What could the issue be.

I have pulled the ABS codes prior to installing the Tacoma VSS and all its telling is that the front and rear sensors are not reading. So no idea.

How'd you wire the signal wire? Did you take the abs signal out of the equation or just add the vss signal to it?

I used a Mossyrocks write-up off Pirate that says pretty much the same as your ttora link. The pic I posted shows which is pos, neg and signal, and which pins on the brown connector pos (7) and sig (2) run to. I had to use a random connector I found in a 3rd gen engine bay.

The only thing I had to do different from the write-ups was remove the abs signal altogether. Once I cut the grey/blue wire the speedo worked just as it should. One caveat- my symptoms as I describe them don't seem to match yours. Not an iffy connection? Bad ground, something like that?


I know we aren't the only 2 people who've done this....really curious to see what others have dealt with.

at what location did you cut the abs signal?

Where the splice was- fairly close to the brown connector. I taped up the cut wire and tucked it out of the way. I'd assume anywhere that interrupted the signal from the abs would have the same result.

Sidenote:
My abs was still getting a signal from the rears and now it's getting signals at all 4 wheels, just none go to the speedo. I don't know with your issues if you're getting a signal or not. If not then obviously it isn't your issue.

So what your saying. Is you cut the wire by the brown connector. And the wire from Tacoma VSS replaced it inline. Rather then taping into it?

My story is. We swapped a elocker axle. And we just cut the rear ABS out. Because I had a abs light and I didn’t care. So the speedo worked of just the 2 front abs sensors. After a front wheel bearing replace they stopped. So I replaced them with a set of used oem senaors. Nothing. Then I rewired the back ones. Still no speedo. Then I installed the Tacoma vss. I get the speedo but sometimes. When I come to a full stop. It doesn’t work after accelerating again. Requires to shut the car off. Maybe I should just cut the wire like you did. Maybe it’s interfering?
 
Yes, all I did was remove the abs signal and there is only the vss wire that inputs to pin2. I did do it somewhere with room to reconnect because it was only a theory that it was my problem. Mine is cut approx 7" from the brown connector so I'd have something to work with if I needed to reconnect it..
It was my problem. Speedo has worked correctly ever since.

If you didn't want to cut the abs wire you could just remove it from the brown connector and add a new (or junkyard) pin with your vss wire spliced on.
I did cover the exposed end of the abs wire so it couldn't ground on something random.

I've not seen another post of anyone else having to remove the abs input and I can't confirm it's your problem of if you've got a funky wiring situation...something pinched or a ground that isn't quite.

I still have abs and it does work- it just has nothing to do with the speedo.

I’ll have to try that. Because possibly it’s caussing a issue. Direct signal from vss to odometer might be better.
 
Maybe also double-check your connector is labeled in the correct order, on the oddball chance it's not.

I can see why this solved my issue, but I don't know why other people haven't had to do the same, why their splicing worked where mine went haywire.

My symptoms as I wrote them 4 years ago:
So I spent some time on it yesterday and got it done. Upon testing it the speedo was jumping all over the place. Well, that's not going to do!

Today I tested again, but took the abs fuse out of the dash panel. I could not get the main fuse out that's in the engine compartment and I didn't want to break it.
Anyway.

The speedo was still jumpy, but smoothed out over highway speeds and it was only a little jumpy compared to before. After doing a bunch of mulling I decided to snip the grey/blue wire and run only the vss to the speedo, not have it spliced in as mossyrocks successfully had done.

Test drove it again and that seems to have fixed the problem.

I can't remember if it was slow to respond or didn't work at times. I think it was mostly just all over the place like a crazy fight for dominance.

Oh, it might be worth just getting a speedo calibrator - that way tire size and gearing changes won't require ANOTHER speedo gear change.
