Speedometer correction?

So I went to my dealer to get an alignment and asked if the had or knew of a way to correct the speedometer due to larger tires. The service rep talked to the mechanic and told me that since my 06 has wheel speed sensors it does not need correction. He said that the computer automatically corrects itself for larger tires. Does anyone know if this is true? I can't wrap my head around how the computer would be able to identify and adjust for different size tires. Either I'm just not too smart or he thinks so. Thanks guys

Not totally false, I used the "recalibrate for new tires" setting on mine and my speedo is pretty close. I don't know which models have that option but my Limited does.

This is the first I'm hearing of this feature. I'll have to look into that.

Can you provide more information on this? Mine is a limited as well. If I do go with the speedohealer I might as well knock out the VSC mod.
 
Sure, let me go out and see how I found the calibration settings...

Menu -> Setup -> Calibration -> Adjust -> Select after tire change

Note that it responds saying it's entered the quickest calibration mode.

I have no idea what other calibration mode exists but it would be interesting to find out more about that.

Sorry but could you dumb it down abit more for me because I'm still confused. Where do you access these calibration settings...Is it through techstream or through a Scan Gauge something?
 
I was searching and found a link to speedo healer on the Toyota 120 forum for those interested.

I unfortunately don't have a JBL system with navigation to see if I can change tire sizes.

I just checked mine and you are correct. I need to find a manual on the JBL nav. and find out more about this! You may have found a free solution for nav owners.

Oddly enough my nav's manual was in the glove box...go figure? Anyways all I could find on the calibration states, "Adjustment of the current vehicle position mark can be done manually, or mis-calculation by changing tire will be adjusted." Not sure if it only affects the nav or the ecu as well. Not sure why the nav would care about tire size as it should just use GPS to calculate speed. So this leads me to believe it will actually adjust the speedo.

For what it's worth, mine has stock tires and using GPS I have found that the speedometer reads too fast. So...when I go up to 265/70-17 the speedometer will actually be just as close to true as it is now (except a bit too slow). I'd rather read 1-2 MPH slow than 1-2 MPH fast because it keeps the mileage on the odo in check.
 
I don't know anything more about it than I posted. I do know I used it in the past and was surprised to see it apparently make adjustments. Recently when troubleshooting an issue I disconnected the battery and my speedo was way off. I re-set that calibration and it came back in line to what it read before. It's accurate to my ScanGauge as well until hitting 70 where I trust the ScanGauge which I compared to my GPS at those speeds.
 
If its adjustable via the nav unit then you must be able to adjust it via techstream or something like that.. [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] can you please get to the bottom of this...have you ever done it before?
 
And since it sets it to "quickest calibration mode" I'd like to know what other calibration modes exist and how they are accessed.
 
Honestly, this is the first I have ever heard of a calibration for tire size. I don't see many 4Runners with the nav systems so I wouldn't know... as far as I know there's no way to recalibrate the tires with the scantool.

I'll try and check tomorrow when I have some free time.
