Speedometer / odometer not working

Are the speedometer and odometer connected to the rear abs sensors?

I’m going to take a wild guess and say yes... I cut my abs sensors after installing my toytec springs and king shocks because I assumed they were going to be yanked anyways and after first test drive I noticed my speedometer and odometer not working.

If that’s not the case what might have happened

The rear ABS should not have anything to do with the speedometer or odometer. I have completely removed my rear ABS wires from the rear axle. And my speedometer and odometer works perfectly. So I'm not sure what happened to you. Mine is 97.

Occasionally when I hit a big pothole. My speedometer will not read. Forces me to pull over, and restart my engine. But I think this has to do with the front end. There are abs stuff in there. And I think because I off road. Mud and dirt have been giving me issues.

On 5-speed manuals, the speedo/ODO take the signal from the rear ABS. Should have thrown a P0500, too.

I did have a po100 and a po110 code when I first started after the install. Looked it up said something about the ecu and I cleared it and it hasn’t come back up. Luckily the scan gauge has a mph feature so using that for now.

Well I lied, scan gauge worked last night driving around the the block for mph I’m 99% sure because when unnoticed speedo not working I clicked through the features to mph but driving to work this morning mph feature wasn’t working.

I've had an ABS issue for a while. The speedo on Waze on my phone works perfectly. It's amazing how good it is.

If it is an ABS issue, you won't get mph off the scan gauge, either.

Are you a stick shift?

My truck is an automatic.

I guess if this doesn’t get figured out my truck will not increase in mileage

Well if TheDurk is right about 5speed 4runner . About the Abs in the back, working with the speedometer. Then that would explain why mine still works.

Because mine used to be automatic and it's swapped to a 5 speed. So I was auto originally. I removed all the abs bullshit in the back. And my speedometer works. . So in the auto, the speedo is linked to the transfercase or front wheels.

OP your issue isn't the rear ABS. Something else happened. Did you blow any fuses by any chance ?And your scan gauge won't work either if the actual speedometer is not working. Like I said, mine works without the rear ABS shit. And I was auto but now I'm manual. So it's not linked with the transmission. It's either linked with the transfercase or front wheels.

All 3rd gen 4Runners with ABS use the sensors for the speedo.
I can confirm the speedo still works fine with the front ABS sensors removed on a '97 Limited, as well as an '01 SR5(both automatic). Dezerts10, do you have the front sensors still in place and hooked up?

I swapped to a Tacoma VSS that goes in the tailhousing of the tcase, so my speedo is no longer run off the ABS system. If you need any help with wiring or anything, feel free to PM me with any questions.

I just threw a p0500 code.
And I do not have front sensors either. I cut those at the install as well. I might go get 4 new abs sensors and see what happens

Holy crap just went to oriellys and asked how much new sensors were. Like $150 per wheel. Guess I’m going to the junk yard one of these days

No front ABS sensors as well? Yeah, you won't have a working speedo.

All ABS equipped 3rd gens use the ABS system for the speedo (ABS system sends signal to cluster, cluster sends signal to ECU). If the ABS system has no speed reference, your truck won't either.

If you are find without ABS, you can put in a speedo sensor on the back of the transfer case and wire that in. You will probably need a speedo calibrator to get the right numbers on the dash...
