I have a 95 3.0 4x4 auto 4runner, and every time im in either 4 low or 4 hi and reverse the little plastic speed sensor gear in the transfer case pops out. This only happens if i reverse if i go forward it doesnt happen, im just getting tired of having to keep snaping that little gear back into the speedo cable. Does anyone know whats going on?

There is an assembly that the gear and shaft attaches to along with the cable at the other end, then it goes into the transfer case...

Is the whole assembly coming out of the transfer case?

Do you have to pull out the assembly to replace the gear?

Pics?

I have done a lot of work with my speedo gear and cable... I may be able to help if I understood the problem better...

The gear should be permanently mounted to the shaft, and there is a clip that holds the shaft inside the assembly. You can buy the whole thing from the dealership for about $25. I'd replace the whole unit.

Any idea what is causing mine to bounce?
I remember back in the day when a speedo had a cable from the transmission that ran up into the dash and right into the speedometer. Bouncing needle meant the cable was starting to go. I think I put 3 on my '77 olds cutlass.

Bouncing is either that the cable needs lubrication (spin it and run some sewing machine oil down it), or that the driven gear is wearing out.

Lube that cable first.
