Speedometer stopped working

Just did my front wheel bearings again. And now, my speedo goes up to 10mph and boom. The needles drops to 0 and stays. Scangauge then reads 0. The rpms are working. I did not notice if the miles are working.

My rear abs is cut out completely. And me speedo did work prior to this for looooong time. Although sometimes going over a big pot hole my speedo would stop working and would only resume after shutting the truck of and starting back up. Same goes now. If I shut it of and start it back. It goes up to 10mph and drops to 0. ?

Yep I'm think one of your or both of your front speed sensors are compromised.

Recheck your connections, and pull them out and look for rust chunks blocking the tone ring grooves and wipe off the head of the sensors

Since you originally had ABS, it runs off the ABS system. My understanding is that it needs at least 2 working wheel sensors to output speed to the speedometer.

You can install the Tacoma speedo drive on the transfer case and bypass the ABS system if you would like...

It’s either the ABS tone rings or a plastic gear in the transmission.

Don’t even mention the abs tone rings. Because I’ll be really pissed if I have to remove my spindle and destroy my new bearings and seals.

As long as your tone rings were properly reinstalled, I would inspect both front sensors- including amy possible wire damage.

I did the Tacoma VSS swap. You can also get them from 3RZ 4Runners. Pretty easy job as long as you don't hate a little wiring

I thought the tone ring on the half shaft?

Negative. Pressed between wheel bearing and "inside" seat edge of wheel hub.

Does it It only require wiring ?

Could there be something inside the odometer causing this ? I just removed the front sensors and clleaned them. And still, 10mph and the needle drops.

Inside the ODO?! Gosh, I really don't know anything about the inner workings of our clusters.
Sensors are both plugged in and wires are undamaged? Seems obvious- I know- but I have to ask. Sometimes the simple things get me.
As far as the VSS swap, you have to tap into +12v, ground, and the speedo signal wire- that's it. Then pull the plug on your tcase tail housing, and install VSS.
I got a full engine harness from the '03 Tacoma I got my ECU from when I did my manual swap, and the VSS wiring is part of that harness. Got my VSS from a spare tcase [MENTION=135317]rkntoy[/MENTION] had [emoji1317]

Everything is plugged in. I just checked the resistance on them. Passanger was 1.6 and driver was 1.7

By solid. I mean it’s not moving freely. Which is good right ? It moves with the hub. If it was free spinning then I’d be concerned.

There is a way to jump the pins on the diagnostic port mounted on the intake and have the abs light flash for the codes. It beats guessing. It should hopefully lead you down the path.

I did it on my old 96 but don't remember exactly how I did it. I followed the instructions my MacMentor when I brought up abs.

Interesting. I’d have to re install my abs bulb. Also, my rear abs is cut out. I only have the front sensors. I am manual swapped. My only issue with my speedometer before this was, if I went over a bad pothole. The speedometer would stop thus the scangauge would read 0mph. The fix: stop to a complete stop and shut the truck off and back on. Have done more then 1 wheel bearing fix on the same abs retainer. This time, after this wheel bearing fix. The speedometer stops working as soon as it reaches 10 mph.

I have removed the sensors and cleaned them.
I have checked to see if the abs ring inside the spindle is lose. Which is not.
I have checked the resistance on them. Passanger was 1.6 and driver was 1.7.

If you never plan on using your ABS I'd go the VSS instal route.

The ABS sends the speed signal to the Speedo first. There is a splice at the speedo that inputs the abs speed into the ECU.

I might have to go to the VSS option. Trying to figure out what year tacoma sensor I need and the plug for it.
