Spider/u joint Bearing Replacement? 1998 2wd

I see 2 of my Spider Bearings/u joint bearings are breaking/damaged. 1998 2wd limited.

Symptoms;

* Vibrations
* Clanking while putting in Reverse and Drive

Can you replace "just" the bearings?

Anyone have a write up?

Sounds like you need your u-joints replaced. Just my opinion though.

My shop quoted me $820 to replace the whole drive/propeller shaft. However, I got up under there and can see its only the bearings breaking. Everything else looks great.

If the flanges (driver shaft ears) are damaged then you will need a new drivershaft. If it just the bearing caps, They come with the u-joints(spider) and cost between $20 - $40 It should only take an hour to install. So really like a $100 to $150 job.


If your drive shaft is ruined, then a junkyard drive shaft should sufice and they are $50 to $100 and 30 minutes to install.

This again is my opinion though.

Chances are your driveshaft is fine, but I agree - I would just get one from a junkyard if you have to. And usually only the rear u-joint is the one that wears out. I wouldn't just replace the (spider) bearings, replace the whole u-joint like Singtoe said and the bearings are included.

I've never heard u-joints referred to as "spiders" either. I remember for a long time I didn't know what my manual was calling the "propeller" shaft either. I thought they were talking about my fan until I saw an episode of a Top Gear UK and they called it a propeller shaft.
