Spidertrax concern after install

Spidertrax concern after install *Update pg 2 *

Just finished installing on a 04 limited and the amount of available treads on the stud to remount the wheel and tire has me concerned.
It went from 13mm of stud to 8.5mm of stud. is the missing 4.5mm anything to worry about?

do you have spridertraxx all around? cuz i just installed mine and the wheel studs on the front end is shorter than the rears.
 
yes, i noticed they were shorter as well after installing them, and that was about 15k miles ago, no troubles with it, and many others on this forum have them on without any problems either.
 
nothing to worry about. you really need about 5 full turns on a lug nut to be safe. ONE THING I MUST STRESS: use a torque wrench to tighten them in a star pattern to at least 90ft lbs of torque (personally i do it to 125 on my other car with big ass adapter/spacers). apply some anti sieze to the bolts.

You can buy longer studs , most are 12mm but can get 14mm motorsport tech n sparks , nv. Spidertrax are 12mm . Noprobs on mine so far 11k later !

Agree with the torque wrench, but the Spidertrax instructions specifically state that both the spacers and wheels should be torqued to no more than 85 lb/ft. Not sure I would exceed what the manufacturer recommends.

Could you post links to the threads re: wheels falling off? I'd like to read those.
 
From what I recall, almost all of the failures have been from improper installation. I would follow the torque specifications provided... over-torquing does not mean that they're bolted on better. You run the risk of over-stressing the lugs and potentially causing a failure. I used Vibra-Tite VC-3 on the lugs when installed my Spidertrax over two years ago and haven't had any issues or concerns. I do continue to check all of the lug nuts with regular maintenance.
 
Even though the stud is not long enough. You can use some et lugs and get the job done. Here are some pictures of the lugs. Et are on the left

Well I don't think there will be any threads on failures from properly installed sets. Since they would not fail. Failures happens when it's not installed right. 99.9% of the time. Then again, it's for offroad use only.
 
i wouldn't overtorque too much either. I did that once and snapped the stud off. had to roll around with only 5 lugs attached to one of my wheels until i got replacement studs.

90lbs seems to be fine.
 
Just to follow up - I plan on changing the studs to ARP hardware. Thom at Spidertrax confirmed via email that the size is 12mm x 1.5mm pitch, and 1.70" long from underhead to end of the stud.
 
OK so I decided that they were safe and went ahead and installed them, at the same time I had the leveling kit installed and an alignment done. Right away I noticed that my 4Runner now wouldn't stay in its lane, wanted to wander and to climb the crown in the roads here. I called Spidertrax and they were very helpful in explaining that I probably have a caster issue, I took it to Les Schwab so I could get a print out to take to the original shop that assured me the alignment was perfect and sure enough it was off on both sides.

Now even after having it rechecked its better but its still a handful to keep it tracking on the road. Ideas? I'm not real excited about taking them off just to try it but if that's what everyone here thinks I should do I will. I also like the way they look so I want to keep them.

Post the alignment specs. I am sure your caster is low after the leveling kit and now it wants to wander. It's a side effect of lifting the ride height and not installing caster corrected UCA's.

Caster-corrected control arms make a huge difference... you don't "need" to replace them, but if you want the steering feel and caster angle that you had before raising the front that's how you get there.

If you're concerned about the install... it's pretty simple.
